Great news! Youve got yourself an agent. Youve sent them all the promotional material they need, given them a hundred different ways they can get in touch with you. Told them youre keen for the work. Now youre waiting by the phone. Waiting... waiting.... waiting... Where are the jobs? Why arent you in demand by now? Havent you done everything they asked?

When you are an Actor, Model, Musician or Performing Artist, working with an Agent to build your career can be a thrilling ride. Unfortunately, more often than not it can lead you to become angry, frustrated and make you want to quit the industry.

What is it with these agents? Are they just out to fleece you for the money? Why do they give one person the audition but not the other? How much schmoozing is necessary to get them to make it all happen for you? Why have you not heard from them for a month?

Youll hear these questions amongst Performing Artists and Models time and time again. So many of them have spent years studying to be a better Performer yet so often the crucial information they need to put the Business into Show Business is left out of their studies.

If only they knew the answers are right here in this book!

I am Kitegirl Coach, Annabelle Drumm and I worked as a professional performer doing television, promotions, fashion, advertising, theatre and live events for about 9 years. I had good Agency experiences and bad ones. I finally found an Agent I could work with and stayed with them for many years.

Youve heard of the 80/20 rule? Well I was in that top 20% that got 80% of the work. I was one of the Elite. The sort of person Advertising Agencies rang to book and didnt even offer an audition to other actors. The sort of person who was sat down with a glass of water and told I could do better by a Casting Director because she knew this was a job for me. I did very well.

Then I was an Agent myself co-founding a company that represented artists in 7 cities over 2 countries for 15 years. So Ive been on both sides of the fence. I know what an Agent needs very well and I offer you my 40 top secrets.

Introduction

Great news! Youve got yourself an agent. Youve sent them all the promotional material they need, given them a hundred different ways they can get in touch with you. Told them youre keen for the work. Now youre waiting by the phone. Waiting waiting. waiting Where are the jobs? Why arent you in demand by now? Havent you done everything they asked?

A few auditions come through. You turn up on time, do as your told and then never hear another word about it. Does this Agent not care? What are you paying these people for?

Well Youre not exactly paying them yet, but dont they want a commission? Youd be happy to pay them if they just got you a damn job! They certainly dont deserve it otherwise.

If these words sound familiar to you then lets take a broader look at the situation and get a better understanding of what an Agent does.

Agencies are designed to have a pool of Talent. The Talent will differ from one Agency to the next depending on what type of jobs that Agency covers, how many staff they choose to have, geographic location etc.

The pool of Talent might range from

an exclusive bunch of well established Professionals plus a few up-and-coming proteges

A few hundred mid range Professionals

Several thousand basic skilled Talent who do work like rent-a-crowd, maybe promotional jobs and as film Extras (where they play the crowd in the background of a film or television scene. In the industry these are affectionately known as spear carriers).

When an Agency is first establishing itself or when work has been quiet (and the industry is renowned for being Famine or Feast, its very rarely a steady flow) the Agency will spend its time promoting to companies that are likely to have work such as Production Houses, Advertising Agencies and Casting Directors.

  • When one of these Companies needs a Performer or Model (Im going to call this the Talent from here on), they contact the Agency with a brief describing what they need. Eg - a 14-17 year old teenager maximum 56, with mid length dark hair, slim build and excellent teeth.
  • The Agent pulls together as many people as the company is prepared to see. Sometimes thats a hundred people over a few days. Other times they will only see 3 people between 3pm and 3.30pm on Thursday.
  • The Agent gives the Talent the audition details and brief description if there is one.
  • The auditions happen.
