Foreword
By Kalli Bogard, Kimberlys Daughter, Seventeen Years Old
From a young age, I struggled with many things. Not only did my parents get divorced, but my mom also suffered from having breast cancer twice. I was only six years old when my mom received her first diagnosis. I was ten the second time. Throughout both of my moms cancer journeys, I experienced several emotions. I constantly felt helplessness, fear, anxiety, and sadness. I felt as though my world was falling apart. Seeing my mom so weak and sick was terrible. Knowing there was nothing I could do, aside from be there for her, made me feel worse. I wanted to take it all away. I wanted to make everything better. I knew that wasnt possible. I realized everything was out of our control.
What we could do, though, was have faith and hope. It was the most important thing we could do as a family. Together, we began to understand what overcoming adversity really meant, and we discovered through experience that we should apply that to our journey. In doing so, we were all able to recognize that we couldnt let her cancer define us.
Although Moms cancer was impacting all of our lives significantly, we needed to look past the negatives and think on the more positive side. To do that, we moved through our lives hoping for the best and living each of our days like it were our last, cherishing memories. It not only helped our family create a stronger bond, but it also made us all realize that we had so much to be thankful for. We found out that anything is possible if we had hope and faith.
Although Moms moods werent always the best, we all knew she was trying even when everything was out of her control. I remember during her first cancer diagnosis, I still wanted her to tuck me in every night and to come to my school events. I was young, and I struggled to understand the situation. It was hard to come to terms with the fact that my mom was sometimes just too weak to do some things. As much as it saddened me, I never realized how much harder it had to be for hernot being able to do the things for me she used to do, having to wear a wig that was most definitely not comfortable.
