CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION TO BRAIN-HEALTHY, GRAIN AND GLUTEN-FREE DIET
Eating healthy and living healthy is not all about depriving yourself of the foods you love to eat, staying unrealistically thin, or being almost weightless. It is not about observing stern dietary restrictions.

The result of healthy eating should be positive and should not leave you feeling slow and sluggish. Instead, it should make you feel good about yourself, help you bring your mood swings to positive levels, and give you more energy to accomplish all your tasks. Searching for good dietary advice often leaves us feeling confused and overwhelmed. There are always opposing parties that contradict a dietary program that we may have thought was already good for us. To make our life easier, here are some introductory tips that are simple and straightforward. There may be restrictions regarding the use of gluten and grains but that is because a gluten-free diet is much healthier and more rewarding especially for people with certain medical conditions.

Even with gluten and grain restriction, one will find that creating a very healthy, varied, and delicious recipe is as easy as regular cooking. The reward is a sexier and healthier you. Who wouldnt want that? 1. Focus on the long-term: There are a lot of quick fix dietary programs that seem too promising to be true. Even if they were effective, they often leave us feeling deprived and we cant seem to keep up with our own pace anymore. We can avoid these issues if we focus on the long-term effects of healthy eating habits.

It all starts with small steps. Gradual change is better than a drastic change we cant maintain. 2. Eat and drink in moderation: Healthy eating is all about moderation. We all need to have a balanced diet and at the end of every meal, we should feel satisfied instead of feeling stuffed. 3. 3.

Develop a positive attitude towards foods: This seems a bit unreasonable you may say. But the truth is, we all need to develop a positive attitude towards food. We need to regard food as nourishment and not just something prepared to go down our throats and stomach. Eating healthy means enjoying the food we eat in the company of people we are happy to share it with. We need to slow down when eating. Chew the food well and listen to our body.

Our body tells us that its had enough. Overeating is never good. Dinner should be lighter. Early dinners are best and midnight snacks should be avoided. This helps regulate weight and the body is more likely to remove toxins and regulate physiological processes better. 4.

Fruits and Vegetables should always be a part of your diet: Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and they contain low calories. They are dense with fiber and vitamins necessary for our day to day living. Daily dietary requirement is 5 portions so eat varied and colorful vegetables and fruits. The more colorful, the healthier. Greens are the best. Fruits are best eaten before a meal or in between meals.

That way they are easily broken down and absorbed by the body. 5. Eat foods rich in calcium, protein and fiber: Calcium helps strengthen bones and teeth. The body should not run short of calcium as it is a vital nutrient for regular physiological processes. Lack in calcium, makes the body turn to our bones. It absorbs calcium from our bones, making them brittle and weak leading to osteoporosis.

Foods rich in calcium are milk and dairy products and green leafy vegetables. Protein, on the other hand, is necessary for energy. It fuels the body to keep going and it is found in fish and other seafood, meat, poultry, and beans.
