The Photography Book
Dear Reader,
We are born with the urge to create and view images. Through photography, we can both capture the moments and events that shape our world as well as communicate what we can't put into words. Our minds constantly replace old memories with new ones. Pictures, however, are unchanging a growing visual catalog of our lives. We use photography to express who we are and what we feel.
Photography is a richly rewarding art. Regardless of your level of interest beginner, serious amateur, professional you'll learn something new every time you put your eye to the viewfinder. Through photography, you can achieve three goals: experiencing the joy of exploring your creative side, the thrill in successfully creating an image that speaks to you and others, and the pleasure of viewers appreciating your end result.
This book gives you the basics of photography and the visual arts so you can experience your environment with a photographic eye, express yourself, and create images that thrill you and your friends. Reading these pages will make picking up your camera both natural and novel, ordinary and exciting. Material that at first seems challenging or elementary will soon hang in your tool belt for use when you are making a portrait of your toddler, snapping a picture of your new car, or recording your mother on her eightieth birthday.
Sincerely,
Acknowledgments

- Lighting, lighting, lighting the word photo means light, and having the correct light is the most important element in getting a good photograph.
- Using a flash. When the light isn't quite perfect, this essential device makes up for it.
- Composition what the scene of your photograph will be. How can it be the most interesting?
- Shutter speed and aperture settings. Photographers using manual shooting modes must understand these concepts inside and out.

- You need to decide what you want to shoot and how you want to shoot it. Do you want to take a clear, factual shot, or are you interested in something a little more interpretive and creative? Minor changes can alter results significantly.
