As an Army brat I know firsthand that its not only our military men and women who serve the countrytheir spouses and children serve proudly as well. Armin Brott has contributed his own brand of service with this wonderful booka great resource with useful checklists and advice that covers every stage of childhood. It will help ease what are difficult journeys.

former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
Too often, those who do the most for us are supported the least. Military fathers would certainly fall into this category. Brotts wonderfully informative book, The Military Father, is not only a much needed salute to the importance of these unique dads but it is also a field manual for their most important front of allthe home front.

Brottdrolly delivers readable, practical guidance on fathering. Covering each year from three to nine, the chapters focus on the developmental states of child, father, and mother/partner as well as their relationships to one another. Considerable knowledge from parenting experts is woven into the text, and special issues (e.g., children with special needs, divorced dads) are also explored.

This, thankfully, is not another one of those goofy, dumbed-down books (think sports metaphors and caveman references) that make such amusingbut unhelpfulgifts for dads. In fact, this is as informative as any traditional parenting book out there (including those aimed at the moms), and in some ways even better. Busy dads will be grateful for Brotts accessible tone and quick-and-painless formatbullet points get the basics covered on whats going on with your child, yourself and your relationship with your partner at each developmental stage.

Acknowledgments
This is the seventh volume in what has become known as the New Father series. Over the course of writing those books (plus twelve more on other topics), Ive come to realize that the process of coming up with ideas and putting words together is just the beginning. Turning those ideas and words into an actual book is a pretty big jobone that is best done with a hardworking, committed group of talented, creative, passionate, and incredibly helpful people. And thats exactly what I was fortunate enough to have throughout this project. So let me take a moment to introduce a few dozen of them and express my gratitude and thanks, in no particular order, to a bunch of people, without whose supportin a variety of waysthis book would still be gathering digital dust on a flash drive instead of resting comfortably in your hand.
Publisher Bob Abrams and Cynthia Vance Abrams, who believed in and supported this projectand everything else Ive donefrom the beginning. My editor Susan Costello, who, as she has many times before, gently, patiently, but firmly guided the manuscript through every step and kept me on track. The rest of the Abbeville team: Louise Kurtz, who supervised the production and Misha Beletsky, who designed the book. Erin Dress, Briana Green, and Michaelann Millrood helped with promotion and marketing, Miranda Ottewell, who copyedited it all; Meg Parsont who juggled her roles as cartoonist wrangler, publicist, and pal with remarkable skill; and Nadine Winns, who does a little bit of everythingall of it very welland somehow keeps smiling throughout.
Mark Baker, Victor Castro, Steve Dickenson and Todd Clark, Julie Negron, Charles F. Wolf, and Basil Zaviski, who contributed many of the cartoons youll be chuckling at as you go through this book. Theyre not only talented artists but they have an insiders view from previous or present affiliations with the military (see pages 326-27). Major Scott Howell, who supplied a ton of research, offered his guidance, and shared a huge amount of insider knowledge about all things military. Laurie Knight, who was also a researcher, and provided an invaluable perspective as an Army spouse. Alison Banholzer, Gracie Blackburn, Veronica Brown, Andrew Langer, Leah McDermott, Brannan Vines, and many others, who shared their personal stories and wisdom, as did Laura
