INTRODUCTION

Many young people are naturally curious about and attracted to bugs. Parents and teachers can take advantage of this natural curiosity to sustain students interest in science and provide an avenue through which they can explore their world.

A NOTE TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS

Insects and other arthropods outnumber all other animals combined. More than 95 percent of all animals may be insects! Insects are incredibly successful, and research suggests they have at least a 450-million-year record of survival on a changing and periodically hostile planet! The pocketsize critters even survived the dinosaurs in, essentially, their current form!

There is obviously a lot we can learn from insects. Insects are our principal competitor for food, and we cannot survive without their beneficial services. Arthropods are found everywhere; they are our most common encounter with wildlife. They are essential in pollination, recycling nutrients, and the production of many useful products. They are a critical link in the web of life.

Our interactions with insects can nurture curiosity and enable youth to develop a realistic and balanced relationship with arthropods, instead of the unnecessary and uneducated frightened reactions.

The Entomologists of Tomorrow

The fascination that young entomologistspeople who study bugshave for arthropods is the beginning of an adventure of discovery that can last a lifetime. Wherever they roam there will be new arthropod adventures awaiting. This curiosity is infectious and, if nurtured, will provide a healthy use of leisure time. They will quickly become the entomologist in their families and peer groups, and this often encourages advanced study. On their arthropod adventures, they will encounter legions of entomologists who will find their curiosity inspiring and who will patiently answer their questions, share their interest, and guide them. Young entomologists knowledge will amaze their teachers and earn their respect.

It has been a privilege to watch so many young entomologists pass through our programs at Mississippi State University, growing intellectually and enjoying a healthy use of their leisure time.

DRESS TO COLLECT

Dressing appropriately for a collecting trip helps ensure your encounters with arthropods are successful. Bites and stings, especially from mosquitoes and ticks, are easily minimized by wearing the proper collecting outfit and/or using insect repellent. High rubber boots, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and veils are appropriate for excellent protection.

Wearing proper collecting clotheslong pants, a long-sleeved shirt, high rubber boots, a cap or hat, plus duct tape, insect repellent, and a net or veilwill help make your encounters with arthropods both safe and successful.

STEP 1: Gather your collecting clothes. It is best to wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

STEP 2: Put on your boots and tuck your pant legs into the boot tops. Loosely wrap duct tape around your pants several times, at the top of each boot, to secure your pants to your boots. On the last wrap, flip the tape, sticky-side out, to collect pests trying to crawl up your pant legs. If youre collecting in the woods, grasslands, or prairie and wearing shoes instead of boots, securely tape your pant legs to your shoes, turning the tape for the last wrap sticky-side out. Sandals are not appropriate collecting gear.

STEP 3: Spray any exposed areas with insect repellent (do not spray it on your face, though).

STEP 4: In the late afternoon and evening, wear a net or veil over your head to protect you from mosquitoes and biting midges.

STEP 5: Check the duct tape after each trip to see if it collected ants, ticks, or redbugs.

STEP 6: After every collecting trip, carefully check yourself for ticks, or have an adult help you.

BUG SCIENCE

Entomologists seek places where insects are abundant, so appropriate attire is very important. For example, an important consideration if working with bees is not to dress in contrasting colors, like black and white. A light-skinned beekeeper with a black watchband can expect bees to sting on the wrist. Similarly, a white shirt on darker skin will attract stings to the point of greatest contrast.

ORGANIZE A COLLECTING KIT

Collecting insects safely requires specialized equipment and techniques. In addition to proper collecting clothes (shown ), including a veil to protect you from bites, consider which materials from the following list will serve you best, depending on where you are collecting, your collecting strategy, and your goals.
