FOREWORD
We are at a grand inflection in the evolution of healthcare delivery and individual engagement. I am mainly an active observer, but I observe from the perch of having been in the middle of medical education and practice, state and national policy, innovation and technologyas a transplant surgeon, former US Senator, and healthcare entrepreneur.
When I speak with healthcare leaders, fundamental challenges continue to come to light. The most compelling and persistent of these is the pressing need to engage patients in their own care. Value-based care may have started as a buzzword, but it is becoming our future.
Containing healthcare costs has appropriately become the leading edge of healthcare reform, but quality must remain central to care. The focus on quality cannot be the personal crusade of the provider alone; individuals and patients, I truly believe, will soon drive the market to the cost-quality balance.
Health On Demand is a step in that direction. This book empowers and engages patient-consumers by sharing practical and accessible tools for taking control of their own health. It explains the necessity and value of knowing your own health options and introduces myriad new tools to do so. It is both a road map and a call to actionfor the patient-consumer and for healthcare providers.
The Affordable Care Act hopes to entice young, tech-savvy health consumers to enter the marketplace. With the high deductibles inherent in the ACA, this next generation of patients will face a different healthcare landscape than their parents navigated. They need a different solution: a partnership.
Partnership means transparencynot just in some aspects, but in everything: quality, cost, and outcomes. Legislation alone will never be enough to achieve that type of transparency. The power to demand true transparency is in the hands of the newly empowered patient and comes from taking charge of ones own healthcare and expecting excellence from the system.
How do we do that? We prioritize our own healthcare education. We avail ourselves of the most progressive technological options. We acknowledge that the status quo is not acceptable and we continue to demand excellence knowing the path forward is paved with change. We invest in building a system that will serve not just ourselves, but our childrens and our nations future.
But while change takes work, Dr. Subramani understands that navigating the healthcare system can be daunting. Though we all have some responsibility, none of us carries the full responsibility.
