Eat Like Your Life Depends On It!
Receiving the diagnosis of diabetes is areal wake-up call, though it can be a blessing if it causes you todecide to improve all aspects in your life. The necessary changesto your diet can end up in probable weight loss (and who doesntwant that?) and higher levels of energy. If youve already decidedto apply the principles of the previous chapter, Soils for Life, youll be ready to enjoy real, fresh foods from your own or acommunity garden.
If youre dealing with Diabetes and otherdegenerative diseases, you will find even more help in laterchapters, so stay tuned. One thing that remains true throughout allthe chapters of this book is that foods that come from good soilsproduce good health results. My special friend, Gardener Georgeexplains, The top 350 mls and especially the top 30 mls [of soil]are key for feeding [plants] with organic matter and water...
I have a personal connection to thischapter, as my own mom had Diabetes, and some of my other relativeshave had weight challenges including myself. The protocols forpreventing and reversing Diabetes will help you, even if you donthave this disease, since they are based on living and eatingwell.
This topic is an important one, sincedegenerative diseases seem to be killing more people on our planetthese days than starvation. Now even our (American) kids have Type2 diabetes nearly 30% and many will not outlive theirparents.
One true healing doctor Ive admired for thelast 30 years is Dr. Neal Barnard. He has a program for reversingDiabetes that outlines a completely new dietary approach topreventing, controlling, and even reversing the disease. Theprogram is based on a series of research studies Dr. Barnard andhis colleagues conducted over the years, with the latest beingfunded by the National Institutes of Health. Published in theAugust 2006 issue of Diabetes Care, that study found Dr. Barnardsprogram to be three times more effective than the American DiabetesAssociation dietary guidelines at controlling blood sugar.
The studies also show that by adopting alow-fat, vegetarian diet free of all animal products and addedvegetable oils individuals can lower their cholesterol, reducetheir blood pressure, and lose weight. Best of all, this dietdoesnt demand that you count calories, cut portion sizes, or giveup all carbohydrates. On the contrary, you can eat as much as youwant.
My contributor for this chapter is Terry Hodges , who ishimself a testimony to controlling and reversing Type 2 Diabetes. Imet him through a consortium of health coaches and he agreed tolend his expertise to this chapter. Terry is also from the GreatNorthwest, my original home in Seattle.
Hodges credentials speak for themselves, beyond his own personal healing journey. He is a certified healthcoach and graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Hehas also studied more than 100 types of diets and protocols. Foreven more back-story, simply view his wellness journey onwww.youtube.com/: (you tube site please)
According to top medical doctors, nutritionists, scientists, and now even the media, Type 2 Diabetesis a completely reversible condition. Yet, millions of people allover the world are being told that diabetes is genetic and theyhave to live with it the rest of their lives. It seems like everyminute someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes, and even 30%of American kids have Type 2 Diabetes.
Another diabetes coach Ive talked with isDr. Brian Mowll. Check out his webinar here .
DESCRIPTION
Type2 Diabetes (T2D) is not truly a disease; it is a metabolicdysfunction involving improper glucose metabolism. While it cannotbe cured in the sense of curing a bacterial infection, it can becontrolled, and in many instances, reversed. If left untreated, oreven if it is treated with standard prescription medications, itcan lead to:
Blood vessel damage (atherosclerosis)
High blood pressure, which when combinedwith atherosclerosis can lead to heart attacks and/or stroke(hypertension)
Eye damage and impaired vision leading topartial or complete blindness (retinopathy)
Nerve damage causing pain in the feet andtoes, which in extreme cases, may require amputation(neuropathy)
Brain damage (Alzheimers, dementia andother forms of cognitive decline)
This is not a threshold condition where yousuddenly have it once you cross an arbitrary blood sugar boundary, but before crossing the threshold you do not. Pre-diabetes and T2Dis a continuum of glucose metabolic dysfunction that, once itbegins, progresses gradually while continuing to damage thecardiovascular system and major organs like the brain, pancreas, liver and kidneys. This condition does not develop overnight, andthe reversal of the symptoms cannot be achieved that quicklyeither, but with time and persistence you can regain your health. You can do this by using an appropriate protocol based upon propernutrition, appropriate supplements, exercise, and stress and sleepmanagement.
Mark Hyman, MD, in his blog post NewResearch Finds Diabetes Can Be Reversed at Huffington Post Healthy Living, writes thefollowing:
Today, one in four Americans over 60 yearsof age has Type 2 Diabetes. By 2020, estimates are that one in twoAmericans will have pre-diabetes or diabetes. Tragically, physicians will miss the diagnosis for 90 percent of those withpre-Diabetes or Diabetes.
From 1983 to 2008, worldwide diabetesincidence has increased seven-fold from 35 to 240 million.Remarkably, in just the past three years from 2008 to 2011, we haveadded another 110 million to the diabetes roll call. Smallchildren, as young as eight years old, are increasingly beingdiagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (formerly called adult-onsetdiabetes). The economic burden of medical care for these peoplewith pre-Diabetes and Diabetes will likely be $3.5 trillion over a10-year period.
If we have a proven way to reverse thisdisease, shouldnt we be focused on implementing programs toimplement it? Unfortunately despite this extraordinary newresearch, the findings will likely be pushed aside in favour of thelatest greatest pill or surgical technique because behaviour andlifestyle change is hard. In fact, with the right conditions andsupport, lifestyle diet and lifestyle change are easilyachievable.
