Foreword
I am happy to recommend Breathwalk to anyone who wants a simple method to improve his or her life. This book is written to help people help themselves. We all walk and breathe. Breathwalk adds focused attention and patterns of rhythmical breath and sound. This evokes the relaxation response and creates an immediate gateway to the cognitive and physiological potentials we all have within our mind/body interactions. Breathwalk is a way to exercise and increase our positive moods. It is an approach to access our innate powers of self-care. I have explored the process of healing and the scientific foundations for the use of evidence-based techniques, like meditation, for over thirty years. I am convinced of its applicability for all of us.We can each make simple choices to live a better and more fulfilled life.
I found in my research that there is a relaxation response produced by rhythmical exercise done with focused attention, as done in Breathwalk. Further, the benefits for positive mood elevation and enhanced healing are triggered by this combination and not just by exercise or walking alone.
The Breathwalk as presented here by Yogi Bhajan and Gurucharan Khalsa has five steps. The first two, awaken and align, call attention to your body and to your walking form. The third step has intervals of rhythmical walking with breath control and a mental focus. This is a classical way to elicit the relaxation response. It is a fundamental way to open your mind for the cognitive restructuring that comes with effective healing. The use of what is called in this book primal soundsa simple sound scale as you walkhelps to interrupt the constant chatter and static of the mind. In step four, balance, your mind often becomes very still and can open you to new emotional choices. Then, as the authors explain, if you choose to do the fifth step, the Innerwalk, you can direct your mind, remember your capability for wellness, and minimize any perceived inner conflicts. This sequence is an excellent way to exercise and to open your power to experience and believe in your own remembered wellness.
We are living in a time when age-old techniques, like walking and meditation, are being reexplored and tested by modern scientific techniques. And we have much to learn about the mechanisms and the full potential of exercise and meditation for our health, emotional balance, and spiritual clarity.
Yogi Bhajan and Gurucharan Khalsas book is a wonderful addition to this continuing exploration.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation go to all who helped bring this beautiful technology for the body and mind into accessible programs and into this book.
Thanks to those who took the first steps and walked with us to experience the potentials of the mind, the vital energy of the body, and the dimensions of awareness Breath-walk makes available. Thanks to Dharm Singh Graham for his editing, his aesthetic contributions and for being a research subject; to Jim Brault for teaching and walking with us in the Caribbean; Mark Canaan, who Breathwalked hundreds of miles and who saw its potential; Jagat Joti Singh Khalsa, who was creative and relentless in telling everyone about this program; Hari Kaur Frank, who walked the many miles teaching with us; Dr. John Mack for his wisdom and kindness; Dr. Ed Resnick, whose consistent healing and professional sports therapy experience is second to none; Dr. Candace Royer, department chair in physical education at MIT, who has encouraged us and helped us introduce this to thousands of MIT students and faculty over the last ten years; and Thomas Moore and Hari Kirn who reminded us that the soul of walking is innocence and listening.
We are grateful for the support in time, resources and ideas that allowed us to research the effects of Breathwalk and its components of breathing and meditation. Deep thanks to Dr. Herbert Benson at the Mind/Body Medical Institute who has been gracious, wise and instrumental in our experimental testing. Special thanks to Dr. Ary L. Goldberger at the lab for nonlinear medicine at Beth Israel for his insight and conversations about wellness, and the patterns that rule our health and awareness. We would like to thank Tony Robbins and his partner Becky Robbins who have encouraged us and given us the opportunity to present Breathwalk to thousands of people through the Life Mastery University. Their unrelenting vision and drive to reach and elevate peoples lives matched our desire to give the Breathwalk experience to a wide range of people from many countries.
The journey to finish a Breathwalk book was the work of many hands and hearts. From its conception Yogi Bhajan has been the source and inspiration. This is one refreshing sip from a fountain of wisdom he has shared to elevate the lives of each of us. Suzanne Oaks and her assistant Lisa Olney at Broadway Books added exceptional collaborative and editorial skills. Our agent, Joel Fishman of Bedford Bookworks, recognized our potential and used his magic to help find it a place for birth. Many thanks go to Peter Caldwell and Jim Reichert of Business Bookworks who initiated us into the process of creating trade books, edited and critiqued us line by line.
Lastly, nothing would have reached completion without the intelligence, editing, organization, and pure dedication of Gurucharan Kaur Khalsa, C.E.O. of Khalsa Consultants, Inc.
If we have left anyone out it is inadvertent. There have been many people who have taught and helped give Breathwalk to the world. To all our gratitude.
