Today, its best known for costumes and trick-or-treating, but Halloween actually started as a Celtic pagan holiday called Samhain. During this ancient festival, people would light bonfires to keep evil spirits away.
Those fires have been replaced by lanterns made out of pumpkins decorated with the faces of spirits wed like to ward offwe call them jack-olanterns. In Europe, these lanterns were originally made from turnips instead of pumpkins. In the eighth century, the Catholic Church decided to turn the festival into a Christian celebration by creating the All Saints Day holiday on November 1. Then, in the ninth century, the church added All Souls Day on November 2 to commemorate the dead. Many countries prepare special dishes to mark this holiday, including pan dei morti in Lombardy, Italy and calaveras in Mexico. The phenomenon landed in the United States in the nineteenth century with the arrival of Irish and Scottish immigrants, and by the early twentieth century Halloween was widely celebrated.
The word Halloween is an alteration of the phrase All Hallows Eve, the name given to the night before All Saints Day. Hallow is an archaic form of the word holy, and even was an Old English word that later became evening. The Halloween spelling is still sometimes used in Canada and the United Kingdom; een is a contraction of even and became een in the American spelling. Halloween was originally a holiday celebrated only in English-speaking countries, but it now has no language or borders. It is a horrifying holiday full of magic, madness, witches, ghosts, and other monsters, and it would be wrong not to enjoy a celebration that is so much fun for young and old alike. To mark the occasion this Halloween, tell the legend of the jack-o-lantern, a ghost story that will send chills down little ones backs! This book contains recipes that are absolutely terrifying and easy to make, and will teach you the basics so you can create your own spooky, sweet, and savory dishes! Vincent Amiel Who Am I? Prepare the buttercream while the cupcakes are baking. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, mix the softened butter and powdered sugar for around 3 minutes. Add the milk, vanilla, and food coloring, then mix again. Make the witch hats. Melt the chocolate in the microwave or in a water bath. Use a paintbrush to generously coat the outside of the cones with chocolate, then place them pointy side up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Refrigerate for about 10 minutes, until the chocolate has hardened. On another baking sheet, use a teaspoon to form small circles of melted chocolate about 2 inches wide. Place a cone (pointy side up) in the center of each disc and refrigerate for 1 hour. Use a piping bag to decorate the chocolate cupcakes with the orange buttercream. Place a witch hat on top of each cupcake and tie a piece of green licorice string around each hat to form a ribbon. To use the ganache in a piping bag, warm it in a water bath or in the microwave beforehand. If you dont have time to do this, you can replace ganache with melted dark chocolate. Just be aware that the texture will not be as soft.
Food coloring Certain recipes call for liquid food coloring. Be careful when you use it and keep a paper towel nearby if you dont want to risk staining your kitchen and clothes. You can also use powdered food coloring: just dilute a tiny pinch of the food coloring in a small amount of water. Adjust the recipes to your tastes This book will show you how to use your ingredients to make a terrifyingly tasty Halloween spread, but its up to you to reinterpret these recipes in your own way.
