Overview of Fortnite: Battle Royale

Unless in real life youve been living on your own remote island and have been detached from the world around you, you probably know that Fortnite: Battle Royale from Epic Games has become one of the most popular games in the world, and for good reason.

Fortnite: Battle Royale combines high-action combat with the need to build, explore, utilize resources, and strategize. Each player controls one soldier throughout each match.

At the start of every match, 100 soldiers are airlifted by the Battle Bus and literally dropped off on a mysterious island with just one primary goalsurvival!

Soldiers are forced to free fall from the Battle Bus.

As land quickly approaches, a glider is activated, allowing for a safe landing. During free fall and once the glider is active, steer your soldier and choose where on the island you want to land.

Using weapons, ammo, loot items, and resources (wood, stone, and metal) that you find and collect on the island, your objective is to be the last person alive at the end of each match. Theres no second place. You either survive or you get defeated when experiencing this high-intensity, real-time, massively multiplayer, online-based game.

Each match lasts approximately 15 exciting minutes. During this time, focus on survival and avoid enemy confrontations, or choose to fight every enemy soldier you encounter. If you manage to stay alive until the End Game (the last few minutes of a match), youll be forced to fight against the small group of remaining soldiers, each of whom wants to survive as badly as you do.

Oh, and theres a deadly storm to contend with as well. When you first land, the entire island is inhabitable. You can explore anywhere. However, after a few minutes, the deadly storm materializes, and then during each match, it periodically expands and covers more and more of the islandmaking the land uninhabitable. This is what it looks like when your soldier is caught in the storm. The longer your soldier stays in the storm, the more damage will negatively impact their health and shields.

As the safe area of the island gets smaller, all of the surviving soldiers are forced into a more confined area, until the End Game, when the safe area of the island is tiny, and the remaining soldiers must fight each other until theres only one survivor. This map shows the island about halfway through a match. As you can see, a large portion of the island has already been ravaged by the storm. Based on the location of the inner circle, it appears the safe area will soon be around Pleasant Park.

To survive on the island, youll need to master a handful of core skills relating to:

Building Using the resources (wood, stone, and metal) you collect, youre able to build structures, ramps, stairs, shielding barriers, and fortresses that offer protection and can help you stay alive. Knowing what to build, how to design your structures, what resources to use, and when to build are all essential strategies to master.

Collecting and Using Weapons, Ammo, Loot, and Resources When you land on the island, youre armed only with a pickaxe. Youll need to quickly find and collect weapons, ammo, and loot items to help you successfully fight enemies and protect yourself. Youll also need to collect resources, so you can build.
