DEDICATION
We dedicate this book to two masters of Energy Engineering. The first is Georgia Ulrich, who at age eighty-four enjoys a full-time career as a business partner with us, reads six to eight books per week both for fun and for our research, manages a household for three, enjoys daily exercise, and claims to have more fun than most people with a variety of hobbies and friends of all ages. To celebrate her eightieth birthday she went up in a hot-air balloon. She exemplifies through her actions the rich rewards of living life fully. When asked her secrets for staying so fully invested in living, Georgia shared these tips:
hang on to your humor,
dont ask for permission, just do it! and
make everything fun.
The second great inspiring Energy Engineering role model is Bob Gary, executive vice president, TU Electric, Generation. For the past six years we have watched him turn problems into opportunities as he has coached us and several hundred others in applying the secrets of brain integration to our daily lives. We would gather and synthesize the research and he would show us how powerful it can be by putting it to work in real situations. Bob has literally saved lives with his intuitive genius and, with his whole-brained team, has turned impossible situations into innovative business wins. On weekends you can usually find him having a grand time on his farm with his wife Joyce and his grandchildren. A master of play and mischief, Bob personifies the genius of abundant energy, innovation, and servant leadership.
PREFACE:
How Energy Engineering Was Born
A fter writing Time Management for Unmanageable People, Duane Trammell and I realized that finding enough time in the day just wasnt enough. Another major challenge was finding enough energy to keep workingand relaxing and playingat 3:00 P.M ., 6:00 P.M ., 9:00 P.M ., and so on. We found, for instance, that we could teach our clients how to budget time for a big project at 2:00 P.M . But if they didnt have a good reserve of energy stored up, the project either dragged on forever or was done in a mediocre fashion.
Our clients complained of needing more energy for these activities:
putting in a truly productive and creative eight to ten hours on the job day after day;
doing more than flopping on the couch and watching mindless TV sitcoms at night;
developing new interests and activities in their spare time;
taking up a physical activity or sport; and
spending quality time with family and friends on the weekend.
Without abundant energy, these things rarely seem to get accomplished. Or we do them half-heartedly, merely going through the motions, so that the satisfaction we could derive from them is greatly diminished.
