Making a baby through love and science? Get the guidance you need to navigate the conception process with confidence and ease.
[A] a well-researched, deeply comprehensive (and readable!) guide to building a queer family in a way that works for you.
Emily Oster, author of Expecting Better

The only evidence-based, up-to-date fertility guide for queer people from an experienced health care provider, this is also the first to be transgender inclusive and body-positive.
Here, queer prospective parents will find sound advice for navigating complex medical, social and financial decisions. Trusted fertility midwife Kristin Kali walks you through the baby-making process: creating a timeline; fertile health for every body; preconception tests; identifying ovulation; donors, gamete banks, and surrogacy; methods of insemination including IUI, IVF and reciprocal IVF; navigating early pregnancy; and preparing for infant feeding, including lactation induction for trans women and nongestational parents.
This book is for all LGBTQ+ readers interested in creating family through pregnancy: anyone who identifies as queer, lesbians, gay men, bisexual people, trans and nonbinary people, couples, single parents by choice, poly families, and coparents. Its an antidote to a culture and medical system that all too often centers heterosexual couples experiencing infertility while overlooking our unique needs. It also contains sidebars with guidance for reproductive healthcare professionals.
This life-changing book is equal parts practical handbook and sensitively written resource. Highly recommended!
Toni Weschler, MPH, author of Taking Charge of Your Fertility

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To my queer community specifically those of you who have - photo 1
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

To my queer community, specifically those of you who have entrusted me to midwife your journey to parenthood, I could not have written this book without each and every one of you. Your willingness to share your vulnerability and your truths have informed my practice in ways that reverberate throughout all I do. You have made me the midwife I am today, and I am honored to play this role in the community we all share.

To my editor at Sasquatch Books, Hannah Elnan: I am ever grateful that you reached out to offer your support and advocacy in publishing this book. I needed a literary midwife, and your sound advice, kind words, and patient reassurance have kept me pushing on.

To Yemisi Yemi Miller-Tonnet, Clare Heimer, Mac Brydum, scar Vias Rodriguez, and Juan Jose Pedro Frasquet, your insights as inclusivity readers have been crucial, and your words of affirmation and praise have carried me through the final edits. You have my heartfelt appreciation for both. Thanks also to Adrienne Black for your heart-centered wisdom and well-honed insights about surrogacy, and for taking the time to share them with me; to Caroline Sausler, for testing all the OPKs; to Annie Moffat, for seeing me; to Tracy Cooper for making sure everyone got pregnant when I was away on writing retreats; and to Brad Farmer, for anchoring me in a sailboat on the Alaskan coast to conceive this book in the company of moon jellies, bald eagles, and the occasional grizzly bear.

Although writing a book during this first pandemic year has been a lonesome endeavor, I have felt the love, support, and encouragement of many. In return, I extend my gratitude to the Jacobs-Brown family, Geraldine Lee, Karma Augerot, Henry Brown, Tree Willard, Rick Deiss, and Jackie Bauer. And to Clementine, the best quarantine companion I ever could have asked for: thank you for naps on my chest, talking to me every day, and for being the most beautiful, stiletto-pawed, green-eyed calico kitten ever.

A lifetime of gratitude belongs to my baby, Finley Ataienne, for initiating me into parenthood and becoming my greatest teacher, and to Gi, Danny, and Prana for coming into my life and expanding my heart. I love you, always.
