Years ago, my friend Rob Mermin was a mime and clown performing in small circuses across Europe. As he traveled with the circus families, he noticed how cool the circus kids were. They were different from the ordinary kids he knewcircus kids were unusually hardworking and self-reliant. Rob got the idea that, somehow, growing up in the world of circus gave those kids an education in life that was missing from normal schooling.

Rob believed this special circus education should be available to all kids. So in 1987, he decided to start his own youth circus in Vermont. True story: When he told his mom he wanted to start a circus, his mother said, Circus shmirkus, go get a real job! And thats what he named it: Circus Smirkus. Kids have been getting an education in life there ever since!

Circus Smirkus is one of many youth circus programs around the world making it possible for kids like you to learn circus. In the meantime, you can try some circus right here, right now. Theres a lot you can do to get started on your ownthats what this book is for. Who knows? Maybe youll get inspired to start your own circus like Rob Mermin did!

    THE CIRCUS SKILLS

There are several families of circus skills, each with its own movement language. In the circus world, there are many more than whats listed here, but this is a good start. You can learn to speak any of the skills here, and the more skills you learn, the more fluent youll be in the language of circus. You can become circus literate!

Skills in bold are taught in this book, enough to get started.

    ACROBATICS, ACROBALANCE, AND PYRAMIDS

Acrobatics involve rolling, inverting, and jumping (cartwheels, handstands, handsprings, and tucks). Acrobalance involves two acrobats sharing their centers of gravity as they support and balance each other (partner acrobatics, hand-to-hand). Human pyramids involve a group of people climbing upon and supporting each other in posed formations.

Sadly, we could not include any aerial skills in this book. They are not DIY skills but require a real, live teacher and a certified rigger to safely hang the equipment from a structurally sound ceiling (never a tree!). Please check out Appendix C at the back of the book to look for an aerial arts teacher near you.

    AERIAL ARTS

Aerial arts are performed in the air and include trapeze, corde lisse, cloud swing, silks, straps, Spanish web, and lyra.

    BALANCE ARTS

Equilibristics include unicycle, tightrope or tightwire, slackwire, rolling globe, rola bola, ladders, chair balancing, and stilts. Headstands, handstands, and standing on shoulders are balance skills, too.

    CLOWNING

The clown is an eccentric, exquisitely imperfect human, in contrast to the mythical, superhuman circus artist. Using slapstick, mime, dance, and physical comedy, clowns elicit laughter through their comical struggles and peculiar perspectives.
