About the Author

Nanetta is an artist and author creating original artworks in the heart of - photo 4

Nanetta is an artist and author creating original artworks in the heart of Kansas. Her days are filled with design, color and possibility. Although her head is full of fanciful images, it was with a self-taught resolution that she learned to engineer organic curves and minute details, translating them into a digital form.

Paper has always been She has designed numerous a part of Nanetta's expression. She has designed numerous CD covers and posters for independent artists and events as well as illustrated children's menus.

Polymer clay, the medium of her first book with North Light, became a favorite when she discovered it in the early 1980s. She has authored many tutorials for Polyform Products, given workshops and produced countless works, including dolls, jewelry, sculpture, corporate displays and fairies from this versatile medium. Nanetta is also now experimenting with bronze and copper clays.

The paper designs in this book are just the beginning of Nanetta's digital works. She continues to add to her own collection of files, adding shoe patterns, chairs and trees that stand on their own. Nanetta's art continues to evolve and explore the melding of old world craft and new millennia technology.

Introduction

The silhouette has been a common element in art for centuries. We can find silhouettes all around us, be it in the shadow of a tree branch on a sidewalk or a deer against a sunset. Silhouettes are perhaps most well known from portraiture. Eighteenth-century artists cut silhouette portraits freehand from paper, while amateur enthusiasts traced the shadows of loved ones onto black paper, then cut them out and framed them. These were kept much as we now keep photos to remember a family member.

After photography was widely available, the silhouette fell out of favor for portraiture but continued to be found in architecture, illustration, textile design, metalwork, and more right up until the present. Today's silhouette is fresh and new with classic styles in contemporary colors.

You can use the silhouettes in this book by themselves plain and simple or embellish them, incorporating other media such as pencil, ink, marker or whatever else your paper will accommodate.

Included in the back of the book are thumbnails of all the designs. You'll also find a CD containing digital files of all the silhouettes used in the projects within these pages, plus bonus designs to expand artistic possibilities. The designs are made to interchange with one another. Mix and match these designs for endless combinations. The seaweed graphic file works as well in a marine setting as it does in a forest. Turn it upside down to trim a fairy dress. Let these designs open your imagination.
