The history of the sex guide for adolescents documents the quite unconscious movement of Western cultures ideas about sex and youth, revealing the heritage of our own sexual beliefs and codes of behaviour. The first section of this book, first published in 1986, traces the development of the sex guide, examining 400 books from 1892 to the 1980s. The second section comprises a detailed analysis of the patterns, content and usefulness of all the contemporary manifestations of the genre. The history of the teen sex manual is a fascinating revelation of American attitudes towards adolescent sexuality.

Guide
We are in the midst of a sex information crisis. Although it is impossible to open a magazine, turn on the radio or TV, or even cross the street without being bombarded by images of sexiness, too many of our teenagers are growing up as practicing sexual illiterates. Studies reveal their ignorance, but so do the statistics on adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.
How can this be when there are so many books on the market115, by my last countthat try to teach young people how to manage their sexuality? Why is it that worried teens and embarrassed parents so seldom seek out these books for answers to their urgent questions? With such a wealth of sex guides for every degree of reading skill and social sophistication and every kind of religious or political orientation, we should long ago have made the right sex information connection for every teen and put all to rights. (Not an impossible goal, as the examples of modern Sweden and Holland show beyond dispute.)
It was to find some of the answers to this puzzle and to offer help in correcting it that I set out to write this book. My goal has been to provide the definitive guide to sex guides, a resource that will give background and understanding and specific title suggestions to librarians, teachers, parents, youth advocates, and young adults themselves.
The history of the teen sex manual is a fascinating revelation of American attitudes toward adolescent sexuality and a vital key to understanding the current problem. The first section of Sex Guides, then, traces that development. Since the beginning of the form in 1892 there have been nearly four hundred such books written for young adults. I set myself the task of tracking down and evaluating all of them, and I believe I have come as close as is humanly possible. For the research I visited the Library of Congress and the library of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction of Indiana University. I also made heavy use of the collections of Los Angeles City Public Library, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, the Los Angeles County Medical Library, and, through interlibrary loan, dozens of other scholarly libraries in the United States.
