Who Are Activists?
I love the idea of learning and then putting it to use. I want to major in social activism [in college]. Ive always been the person trying to help people. I just want to do something thats meaningful. high school senior Natalie Strohm, comment to reporter in 2014
H undreds of thousands of Americans are vigorous advocatesactivistsfor or against a social, political, economic, or environmental cause. They may stand on street corners with handwritten signs. They often march carrying banners. They lobby politicians or corporate officials. They write letters or post messages on the Internet. Sometimes they commit acts of civil disobediencedefying laws to further their particular issue. In some cases, they may clash with people who vehemently disagree with them.
Activists are represented in varied age groups, ethnicities, and geographic locations. They take on such issues as abortion, civil rights, global warming, human trafficking, toxic waste, jobs, and other causes. Young people play an especially important role in the realm of activism. Twenty percent of the U.S. population is between the ages of ten and twenty-four, and their involvement is essential to disrupt the status quo and build a smarter, healthier and more peaceful world, according to the Youth Activism Project.
