CHAPTER 1: INFLAMMATION
WHAT IS INFLAMMATION?
Inflammation is a vital process of the immune systems reactions to injuries and infections. It can also be described as a way into which the body signals its defense mechanism for the healing and repair of damaged tissues. In simple terms, inflammation is a way by which the body defends itself from damaged tissues, corrects them, and protects itself from foreign substances like bacteria and viruses. Without inflammation (which also works as a physiological response) healing may take longer, and infections might worsen.
Inflammation can be challenging if the recovery process takes more time than expected. However, chronic inflammation may lead to diseases such as stroke and heart ailments. It also brings about autoimmune diseases like lupus and arthritis rheumatoid. You only need a healthier diet and a better lifestyle to manage inflammation.
The types of inflammation are
Acute inflammation:
This happens when you have a cut on your knee, an aching throat, or a sprained ankle. Normally, it responds immediately on the affected area.
The main signs of acute inflammations are;
Swelling
Redness
Heat
Lack of function
Pain
When you suffer from the condition, the veins dilate. However, the flow increases while the red blood cells concentrate on the injured area. Also, cytokines might get released by the damaged tissue. Cytokines also function like emergency response, which acts by collecting immune cells, nutrients, and hormones to heal the inflammation. Other substances such as prostaglandins form blood clots to help repair the damaged tissues. During the healing process, the victim may experience fever and pain that decreases as the body heals, and the soreness diminishes.
Chronic inflammation:
This form of inflammation has overall effects on your body and lasts longer. We also know it as low-grade inflammation because of its steady nature throughout the body. Surprisingly, it can also cause other diseases. Low-level inflammation implies that the internal threats signal a response to the immune system. Although there is scanty information about its effects on your system and the mechanism involved, its clear that chronic inflammation may also cause ailments such as stroke and heart attack.
When inflammatory cells stay longer in the blood vessels, it forms a plaque. The body does not recognize it since it does not belong to your system.
When the plaque becomes unstable, it ruptures, causing blood blockage in the brain and heart. This is a dangerous occurrence as it creates a stroke or cardiac arrest. Also, chronic inflammation damages the DNA, resulting in a cancerous ailment. Since the inflammation does not have noticeable systems, some medical experts test the patient for C-reactive to mark their status.
An advanced CRP may increase the risks of coronary diseases. Also, the condition may cause contamination or chronic inflammatory diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Poor dieting, unhealthy lifestyle, and environmental exposure are some factors that increase levels of chronic inflammation. However, it can be mitigated by improving your lifestyle and watching your diet.
Besides the mentioned ailments, inflammation may cause arthritis (famous for joint inflammation,) gouty, psoriatic, and rheumatoid arthritis.
