What is Diabetes?

D iabetes is a compound group of diseases triggered due to various causes. People suffering from diabetes have a high level of blood glucose which is also known as hyperglycaemia or high blood sugar.

Diabetes is a malady of metabolism. Metabolism refers to the way our body uses digested food for growth and energy. Most of what we eat is broken down into glucose. Glucose is a form of sugar that enters the bloodstream. It is the chief source of fuel for our bodies.

The cells in our body absorb the glucose and use it for growth and energy. Glucose cannot enter our cells without the presence of insulin. Insulin makes it likely for our cells to take in the glucose

Diabetes develops when our body does not make enough insulin, does not respond to the insulin produced by the pancreas or is not able to make use of the insulin efficiently.

Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. After eating, pancreas release adequate amount of insulin to move the glucose into the cells which are present in the body.

The pancreas contains islets, those are clusters of cells. Within the islets, there are Beta cells that help in making insulin and release it into the blood.

Ways to control Diabetes

D iabetes can lead to other diseases such as heart or kidney disease, as well as an early death if uncontrolled.

Diet plays a significant role in the treatment of diabetes. While there are a number of advantages to following a diabetic diet, there may be a few disadvantages for some people. It is important to consult a doctor or dietitian to guide you with your diabetic meal plan.

It is important to control diabetes by using natural methods. We have listed a few easy ways that will help you control the level of blood glucose and help diabetes not affect you.

Drink plenty of water : Increased intake of water plays a significant role in regulating the blood sugar level. Vasopressin is a hormone that helps to maintain water in the body, hence, when the body is dehydrated the hormone signals the liver to produce more glucose which in turn increases the blood glucose level.

Have citrus fruits : Fruit diet is extremely important for diabetics. In order to control blood glucose level naturally, diabetics should include fruits like grapefruit, orange, berries, sweet limes, lemon in their diet since they have properties like insulin.

Try following a Vegan Diet : Studies state that people having type 2 diabetes should follow a vegan diet that extraordinarily helps in controlling the sugar level. Grains such as wheat, millet, brown rice, corn, oatmeal, barley etc. are beneficial. Vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans spinach etc. must be included; potatoes must be avoided. Legumes like peas, lentils, non-fat soy products, beans are the best.

Exercise Regularly : Regular exercise increase sensitivity to insulin. It also helps to burn fat, lower blood pressure cholesterol and improves circulation. Diabetic patients should exercise in order to increase their physical strength and lose weight.

Go for alternate therapies : Acupressure, homeopathy and Ayurveda are natural therapies that help significantly control diabetes.

What are smoothies?

A smoothie is a blended and sweetened beverage generally made from fresh fruits. The word "smoothie" was coined by Mabel Stegner on June 23, 1940 in an article titled "Let the blender do it for you! Apart from fruits various rich ingredients are added to a smoothie like peanut butter, milk, ice creams, yogurt, chocolates, honey etc.

The consistency of a smoothie is like a milkshake, thick and smooth. Smoothies are often targeted for people who are health conscious. Number of variations such as whey powder, green tea, soy milk, nutritional supplement etc. can also be added to make the mixture all the more tasty and apt for people suffering from diabetes or who are health conscious.

C HERRY BERRY SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS :

  • 2 small bananas
  • 1 cup fresh frozen berries, unsweetened.
  • 18 ounce nonfat yogurt, blueberry flavored
  • 2 cup frozen pitted cherries, unsweetened
  • 2 cup almond milk, vanilla flavor (unsweetened)

DIRECTION:

  1. Blend the mixture of milk, yogurt, cherries, banana and blueberries in a blender
  2. Cover it and blend until smooth and thick
  3. Pour it into tall glasses and serve the delight

HOPPER SHAKE

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup coconut cream
  • 8 fresh mint leaves
  • 3 tbsp of coco powder
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 1 tsp of maple syrup
