INTRODUCTION
Many people pick up a book on exercise because they want to get fit perhaps theyd like to lose weight, fit back into their favourite jeans or look better for a party in a months time. Exercise is so often about aesthetics, the superficial stuff unless perhaps weve had a health scare or similar. We usually embark on a fitness or health kick when we have something negative going on, especially if we feel under pressure to change something about who we are or our bodies. When did you last think about putting on your running shoes or rolling out your yoga mat in order to have fun? To take care of your body? To feel good about yourself? Thats what weve lost in our relationship with movement its become something we have to do.
Modern life takes movement away from us in so many ways better transport options, sedentary screen-filled jobs and any products and takeaway meal we want delivered to our door. Weve lost that connection with our natural movement everything we need is within easy reach and movement so diminished in our lives.
As many of you know, I began dancing when I was young. I caught the bug and was lucky enough to make it my career, which means I get to do something I love every day and travel around the world. But what still gives me the biggest kick is teaching dance to others. Its the enjoyment they get from being caught up in the music, from challenging their body to discover completely new rhythms of movement, and achieving something they didnt think they could. Some find it easier than others, but everyone comes away from learning to dance with a new relationship with their body, and a whole new take on the power of movement to make you feel SO good, so alive and energized and with a whole host of health benefits on the side.
I want to show you that getting fit doesnt need to be about running marathons or feeling the burn. You dont need to find two hours a day around work, family, kids and life to make a big difference to your health. I want to share the joy that movement gives, the buzz that ten minutes of getting active every day makes you feel, and how movement is at the heart of a healthy body and mind.
21 Days of Easy Wins to Get Movement into Your Day
I created the 21-Day Plan (see ) to turn around your relationship with your body and movement, and to help you find the best exercise for you exercise that you want to keep doing. Ill show you different ways to bring movement into your life and bolster that with lifestyle hacks and tips on nutrition, rest and fostering a positive mindset to make you feel great.
Ive devised 21 fun and effective movement routines that will change your body and the way you feel about moving it. Whether youre tempted to try tap or salsa, body conditioning or ballet, Pilates or a yoga flow, there is something for everyone, and itll only take a few minutes every day. Ive chosen three techniques that complement each other and that have been life-changing for me yoga, Pilates and, of course, dance that will put a big smile on your face.
In is where you can explore your relationship with movement and health, and try out 21 quick and uplifting dance, yoga and Pilates routines that I specially created for this book in order to help you create a whole new movement habit. Regular and consistent movement makes a difference this is not about full-on HIIT sessions and fancy outfits; its about getting real with your body and showing it the love it deserves. The plan also includes weekly mantras and journaling prompts to help promote a positive mindset, along with nutrition advice and delicious recipes to nurture your beautiful body.
You might not feel as if you have the energy to do this right now but I PROMISE, give me 21 days and Ill have you sleeping better, moving freely and feeling fantastic about yourself. And theres no fancy equipment needed to make these changes; all of the routines are easy to do from the comfort of your own home.
THIS IS FOR YOU
This book is a guide, not gospel. You are you, and life is about finding out more about what you enjoy, and what makes you feel good in your own way. The real secret to health is finding the joy in movement, and then enjoying and appreciating what your body and mind get in return. Who wouldnt want more flexibility, co-ordination, balance, sleep and happiness?
Movement and exercise are at the beginning and the end of how I live my life. They give me the energy to work and play and to feel good about myself, and the more ways I find to enjoy movement and exercise, the more my life is filled with joy. I want the same for you.
