Do you have Arachnophobia? No, I always scream and run away when I see a spider!
Well, maybe you don't have a fear you're trying to get over, maybe you just wanted a pet that's a little more exotic than a kitten!
At the very least, you're interested in Tarantulas and that's never a bad thing! Tarantulas get a bad reputation and are truly under appreciated. Well you've made it here, which means youre doing your research! Whether youre new to the craft of Tarantula Keeping or you have a Tarantula already and just have a few questions, we hope to provide some answers.
In general, Tarantulas are quite easy to care for in relationship to other animals, so beginners get away with a lot of mistakes, but they do have their own specialized needs. Tarantulas are dispatched all over the world in a variety of harsh conditions, but as a Tarantula keeper you don't want to put your Tarantula through those same conditions unknowingly be harming them. Tarantulas can be fun and easy to maintain when done correctly. There's a variety of species, in the hundreds to be exact and we know you're eager to get one of each.
Debating over whether or not to purchase a pet tarantula? What are the pros and cons of owning a tarantula? Are they dangerous? Let us measure the positive and negative aspects of owning a pet tarantula. Now as we said before, Tarantulas can and will make great pets, but ONLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO COMMIT! Tarantulas are not toys, and although easy to care for, should not be neglected or cast away.
Although, I have tried to get my pet tarantula, Medusa, to do play fetch, she just stares at me with those wild eyes. Tarantulas spend a large majority of their time striking model poses and conserving energy rather than running around. Outside of feeding time, your Tarantula will usually find a nice dark corner to cuddle up in. When your Tarantula is getting ready to molt it will be even more reserved as it prepares its body for the upcoming change. Now don't let this full you though, if you let your Tarantula out, it will become an overnight track star. Tarantulas are extremely fast and should not be underestimated. I personally have a Feather Leg Baboon Tarantula, and although he spends most of his time hanging on the side of his enclosure, quite literally, all it would take is a split second for him be out and causing wide spread panic. Tarantulas are nocturnal creatures, so your best bet if you want to view your pet is to keep them in a low light, during their nightly hours, and watch from a quite distance. Also please refer to our section on the Best Beginner Tarantulas to avoid getting a burrower! Beginners have a hard time appreciating these the most.
It is also important to research the specific species you will be buying! Most new Tarantula owners want to get their newly invest pet out and hold it. Sure, you may even find videos of people who are doing it quite successfully but at least from our perspective We Recommend, Under No Circumstances, Do You Hold Your Tarantula . Some species are what is known as "Pet Rocks," such as the Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula and will probably rest comfortably in your hand but this is not natural. Tarantulas are sensitive creatures that do not like unknown disturbances, so don't do it! Tarantulas are a purely viewing pet and should be treated with respect. You also don't want to unknowingly stress out your Pet Tarantula. Tarantulas are also fragile creatures and all it would take is one accidental drop or for the little guy to jump out of your hands and it could be a short life for your respective Tarantula. Some species are not "Pet Rocks", are HIGHLY DEFENSIVE, and WILL BITE YOU , so unless you want to guess the temperament of your Tarantula, I wouldn't try to cuddle up with it.
Although you dont literally have to put a ring on it; you should be prepared for what youre getting into. The average lifespan of a tarantula can be up to 20 years depending on the gender. Shoot, thats longer than you have to keep most of your children. The typical male species will sustain life for 2-5 years, while the females live anywhere from 10-20 years in a domestic environment. That means your Tarantula will be holding you responsible for a very long time. It will probably move between multiple habitats (its and yours) before reaching its final maturity
As with most pets youll need to make sure youre taking care of its basic needs and providing food to eat when its hungry. Youll need to monitor for molting and remove any unwanted food with 24 hours. If its about to molt you want to remove that food immediately to avoid any unwanted injuries to your Tarantula.
In case you didnt know, Tarantulas are carnivores! They need live food and their diet consists of crickets , mealworms (sparingly, if at all), roaches (yup), grasshoppers , small insects , lizards , and pinkies . Now, if you live with a save the mammals advocate like I do, the option of mice is not on the menu, but if you have a problem with roaches, well, you are shopping in the wrong market. So it is important to ask yourself if youll be able to constantly march off small crickets to their doom for the sake of your eight legged friend, because theres no way around it.
The 10 most common pets would be Dogs, Cats, Hamsters, Fish, Mice, Guinea pigs, Birds, Snakes, and Iguanas. How do tarantulas compare to these commonly owned pet? Well lets check.
