    INTRODUCTION

I tapped into my creativity in my early twenties. I was a classic case of a kid not knowing what to do with his life. After some mental-health lows, I made the decision to drop out of college and quit my job to take a breather. I found myself back in my parents basement, and something compelled me to pick up a crochet hook and some yarn.

I only knew crochet to be table decor, sweaters, hats, and scarves. I was still eager to learn, but it wasnt until I stumbled on some pictures of crocheted Pokmon characters that I decided to fully commit to this craft. Squirtle, a Pokmon starter, was my first-ever project!

I wasnt naturally good at crochet. But I thought if I tried to learn for eight hours, Id be eight hours better than I was, and I stuck to that mindset. Finally, it clicked. I went to sleep that night feeling proud of myself and woke up with an excitement that I can still vividly remember feeling.

I wanted to be able to design my own patterns, so I followed other peoples designs to better understand shapes. I had never felt creative growing up, but imagining 3D shapes made of fiber made sense to me.

This craft has been absolutely life-changing, even though picking up crochet was completely out of left field. It has done so many good things for my mental health and offered different opportunities, created new relationships, and allowed new ways to express myself. I look forward to letting my style of crochet shapeshift as long as I continue to push myself. Crochet is cool, and I believe it will always remain that way.

    WHAT IS AMIGURUMI?

Amigurumi originated in Japan, and it combines the words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi (sewn), meaning stuffed dolls. Similar doll-making techniques with crochet and knitting date back to 1185 during the Edo period. The craft didnt hit the Western world until the early 2000s, and its popularity has been rising ever since. Im so grateful to take part in this area of Japanese culture.

Amigurumi is typically worked in 3D, which offers opportunities to make so many different projects. Almost any tangible item can be turned into a cute stuffed doll. This book shows you how to create my patterns, but I encourage you to use the techniques to create your own wonderful dolls.

I am so grateful to be able to enjoy a portion of Japanese culture, and I thank the people who were able to come up with such a creative art form!

    THE SUBCULTURE OF YARN PUNK

During my first few years of crocheting, I called myself a crocheter, but I never felt I belonged in the fiber communities. I didnt see other young men taking up the craft, and I was aware of the played-out stereotype of the typical grandma style involved in fiber crafts. In picking up the craft, I soon realized that it led to some quick assumptions about myself from others. I found it interesting that a craft such as crochet was usually associated with ones gender, sexual orientation, appearance, and even lifestyle. I dont think this should be the case, and I think those assumptions stop people from wanting to try fiber crafts.

The subculture of what I termed yarn punk intends to give everyone whos interested in fiber art a space to feel confident and comfortable. With crochet so accessible through the online landscape, its easier than ever for anyone to get into fiber art. A single style no longer defines crochetor any other fiber art.

I want to add that many grandmothers who crochet have established an iconic style, and they are worthy of as much respect as those who pursue a different approach. Whether your crochet is gothic, boho, rainbow, or anything in between, it fits the yarn-punk mold.

The punk part of yarn punk refers to a mindset: punk has always put an emphasis on nonconformity, individual freedom, and DIY principles.

Crochet fits the punk subculture perfectly. Taking the time to create something by hand goes against the norm in todays digital and fast-moving society. The craft offers so much individual freedom to make something your own. Even when following a pattern, your work will still look unique, which is such a beautiful thing. Being able to create something from practically nothing is as punk as it gets. If the title resonates with you, you are more than welcome to wear it proudly.
