Introduction
Some 800 years ago, or more, someone wrote abook called the Codex Regius. As part of this book, theauthor included an epic poem, known as the Hvaml, orThe High Ones Words. This poem was ostensibly written by OdinHimself. The Hvaml included
Gestattr, a collection of rules onproper behavior,
a love story and some comments on how womenact,
the Loddffnisml, more rules onproper behavior directed at someone called Loddffnir (whoapparently needed extra instruction),
the Rnatal which describes how Odingained the Runes, and
the Ljatal, a description of thepowers of the eighteen runes that Odin won in the Rnatal. In thiscontext, rune means magic spell or something similar.
Sadly, the Ljatal does not actuallygive us the charms, only their supposed powers. For example, describing the third of the eighteen Runes, Odin (or His ghostwriter) tells us:
(150. For the third I know, if I have greatneed to restrain my foes, the weapons edge I deaden: of myadversaries nor arms nor wiles harm aught)
This is an extraordinarily useful power, preventing an enemy from hurting you with weapons or withstrategies! Too bad that time has lost the actual spell for us.
What history has preserved for us are alphabetscomposed of runes. In this context, rune simply means letter.Nowlets think about that a moment. The same word is used for aletter and for a spell or magic charm. It works in English, toowe spell with letters, we use spells in sorcery andwitchcraft.
Is something sinister going on here? Of coursenot. Writing and Magic have always been connected.
Take a good look at your alphabet.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.
Or the Cyrillic alphabet:
Or the Arabic alphabet:
Look at the letters closely. Do any of themsuggest sounds, numbers, meanings, or words JUST BY THEIR SHAPES?Of course not. Yet they have power. The letters of these alphabetscan imprison words, thoughts, in such a manner that others maypartake in them.
Try this. Say out loud, I want vegetables withmy dinner. Just do it. Now look at what you have left of thisstatement. Nothing. Its gone.
Now take a piece of paper and a pen, and writeI want vegetables with my dinner. Put down the pen. Look at thepaper. If you put it in the mail, a person thousands of miles awaycould read that sentence. If you put it in a time capsule, then, 50years later, a person who wasnt even born when you wrote thosewords might read them when your capsule is unearthed.
That is power.
The Runes have power, too. Here they are (thisis the Elder Futhark alphabet, one of many runic alphabets):
f u a r k g w h n i j p z s t b e m l d o
Like other alphabets, Runes can imprisonthoughts, allowing others to experience them. Runes, however, aredifferent from the alphabets of other languages. It isnt just intheir shape, it is in their origin.
The Lore tells us that Odin hung Himself upon awindswept tree, he hung their nine days and nine nights, sacrificedHimself to Himself, to learn the runes. He had to learn the basicletters before He could learn the longer words, now didnt He? Westill teach our children to read that wayletters first, thenwords, then artistic styling of words. The letters of the Runicalphabet are more powerful than those of other alphabets becausethey were won through Odins self sacrifice. Each contains a tinyportion of the All-Father within it.
The Runes are alive. Within them lives a portionof the God of Knowledge. Not only do they live, they KNOW.
Each of the Runecards presented here includes aliving, knowing Rune. The knowledge that is sought by that Rune isspelled out on the card (literally). You arent obligated to followthe precise meaning as written on the card, let the pictures beyour guide as well. The Runes know.
Also within these pages, you will find 24spreads for the cards, also in the shapes of the living Runes.Using a spread is a different way to tap the knowledge of a Rune.First, relax and make sure you can focus on what you are doingrather than other things going on in your life. Concentrate on theshape of the Rune whose spread youve chosen, then on a questionappropriate to the spread youve chosen. Shuffle your deck (and itdoesnt have to be the Rune deck, it can be any divinatory deck, including Tarot, or for that matter stones with runes or othersymbols carved or painted on them) and lay the cards/stones out inthe runic shape, in the numerical order given. Consider the meaningof each card combined with its position in the spread; soon, theanswers will be clear to you.
The use of the spreads presented in this bookwill have an effect on you. Each time you consider the meaning of aRune, each time you concentrate on a spread, the energy of thatRune will pass through you. It is a little like you are a musicalinstrument, and the Rune is a tuning fork; you begin to harmonizewith the rune. When you harmonize with a rune of strength, youbecome emotionally stronger; when you harmonize with a rune ofknowledge, you become better able to utilize the knowledge that youpossess. Just as you cannot pass close to a fire without feelingwarmth, you cannot touch the Runes without being made a morecapable person.
Sosit someplace comfortable, focus on thequestion that you need answered, shuffle the cards until you feelthat you are doneand lay them down in order. The Mysteries of theUniverse await your inspection.
