R0 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13 Contents f OOD IS MEDICINE. It can either help your body or harm it. As a nutritionist and mom to three boys, Im well aware of how food affects the body for growth, strength, health, and healing. Ive seen the benefits of food as medicine in the lives of my family, friends, clients, and in my own life. Ive been a believer in the alkaline diet for several years now, but it was one of my best friends, my beautiful aunt, that turned me into a complete advocate. The shock. The shock.
The devastation. The worry. The unknown. Shes been my hero, my confidant, and my camping partner my whole life. This was the hardest news to hear. But seeing my aunt transform her eating habits completely into the alkaline diet that helped to support her cancer treatment and healing was genuinely mind-blowing.
To this day, she is still the strongest and most courageous woman I know, and she maintains the healthy eating habits that she created during that time. I hope this book allows you to use the food you eat for healing and health, and to see how truly fantastic whole, natural foods can be for the body. I became a nutritionist out of my own experience of healing. I am still passionate about it after years of seeing how it has helped my family, friends, and clientsjust like my aunt. This book is designed to minimize hands-on kitchen work, so that living a more alkaline life is uncomplicated and beneficial. Even though the alkaline diet can be challenging to understand, you can use the recipes provided to start introducing more alkaline foods into your life.
Every recipe I created only requires one pot to minimize cleanupbecause your time is valuable. The kitchen equipment required are everyday staples like salad bowls, stockpots, Dutch ovens, casserole dishes, saucepans, and sheet pans. You will see a few mentions of using slow cookers or Instant Pots as optional tools in these recipes, but you dont have to invest money in an appliance that isnt necessary. If youd like to make meal creation even more manageable, there is a chapter dedicated entirely to labor- and time-saving tips, including ways to work with your existing equipment. The goal of this book is to help you prepare delicious, effortless alkaline meals with minimal work and cleanup. The foods you eat have a direct impact on how you feel. The foods you eat have a direct impact on how you feel.
The alkaline diet improves health by supporting your body in maintaining its natural acid-alkaline balance and reducing the acidic load. Many factors contribute to this balance, and the foods you eat are one of them. The alkaline diet focuses on eating alkaline-forming foods, such as fruits and vegetables, while reducing acid-forming foods, such as meat and dairy. A 2015 editorial in Integrative Medicine confirmed that eating alkaline foods can reduce the risk of acidosis, allowing your body to focus on maintaining balance and preventing disease. Acid-Alkaline Balance Your body is incredible. In fact, it doesnt necessarily need your help to maintain homeostasis, or the natural acid-alkaline balance, because your body does it naturally.
This balance between acid and alkali is measured by the pH scale and is tightly regulated by the body to sit comfortably at a slightly alkaline pH of 7.36. Your lungs and kidneys are responsible for the role of maintaining this critical balance, while your bones buffer with calcium when needed. For reference purposes, the pH scale ranges from 0, which is highly acidic, to 14, which is highly alkaline. Its not that acid is all bad or alkali is all good, though. While your cells, tissue, and blood lean towards being more alkaline, your saliva, urine, and bowels tend to be more acidicall for a specific purpose. For example, your stomach is highly acidic to help with digestion, nutrient absorption, and killing unwanted bacteria and viruses.
