This directory succeeds A Directory of Library and Information Retrieval Software for Microcomputers compiled by Hilary Dyer and Alison Gunson which was published most recently by Gower (now Ashgate) in its fourth edition in 1990.
The task of updating this directory was undertaken by the LITC (Library Information Technology Centre) in 1992. The LITC provides information and expertise on library and information software. It publishes books and journals specialising in this area and maintains extensive and up-to-date information on software currently on the market. It is based at South Bank University, London and is partially funded by the British Library Research and Development Department
Previous editions of the directory have been international, however the majority of packages included were supplied and supported in the UK or US. This directory has a different geographic emphasis aiming to provide a single source of information on microcomputer software for library and information work available and supported in Europe. This reflects increased interest in Europe particularly amongst the member states of the European Community, the opening up of Eastern Europe and the desire of most users to purchase software which is supplied and supported locally.
Whilst every effort has been made to make the information contained in this directory as complete as possible, information for some countries was sparse and as a result may not be complete. It is hoped that we will be alerted to any omissions for inclusion in the next edition of the Directory. A database containing the contents of this Directory is being maintained at the LITC and will be kept up-to-date to provide a basis for the next edition.
The update to this directory began with analysis of the data collected by Hilary Dyer and Alison Gunson in the form of a database. This was modified to reflect the scope of the new directory, new products were added and existing products updated using resources at the LITC (mainly product literature, journal articles etc) and information supplied by a network of LITC contacts in Europe. Information was stored in two databases, one containing product records and one containing suppliers.
Once information had been collected for as many products as possible, all the suppliers of the products were mailed (or in the case of products with supplier/distributor/dealer networks, the main supplier was mailed). The suppliers were asked to confirm that the details we had were correct, to modify the details if appropriate and to inform us of any other products which they supplied. We had a good response from the suppliers contacted and are grateful to them for their cooperation.
On receipt of replies from suppliers, the databases were duly updated and used to generate the text and indexes for the directory. Data was output in ASCII files with attributes which could be read into Ventura where the text was desk-top published to produce the camera ready copy.
Software has been included in this directory if it comes within each of the following categories:
  • Microcomputer Software
It runs on microcomputers supporting MS DOS/PC DOS; OS/2; UNIX; PICK; and APPLE MACINTOSH operating systems. Software running exclusively on BBC microcomputers has not been included
  • Libraries and Information Centres
It is suitable for use in library and information work and particularly if it has one or more of the following functions:
    • Acquisitions
      Archives
      Cataloguing
      CD-ROM interface
      Circulation
      Communications
      Community information
      Computer aided learning
      Data entry
      Data reformatting
      Free text retrieval
      Image retrieval
      Information retrieval
      Library housekeeping systems
      Inter library loans Media control
      Personal bibliographic reference management
      Serials control
      Thesaurus control
      User education
      Viewdata
Industry-standard word-processing, spreadsheets, accounts, desk-top publishing or other office administration systems have not been included.
  • Europe
It is marketed and supported in any E.E.C. member state together with Scandinavia. This includes Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Eire, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, UK, Sweden, Norway and Finland. For these countries every effort has been made to make the information as complete as possible. Software supplied in other countries has been included where information has been available. However, in these countries no attempt at completeness has been made.
This directory is divided into five sections. The first section is the main section and contains the software entries arranged in alphabetical order by software name. Full details of the suppliers of the software are contained in the second section the Suppliers Index which is arranged in alphabetical order by supplier name.
Three further indexes are available. The first is a function index using the descriptors listed in the software entries. This is followed by an index according to microcomputer operating systems supported. And finally, a geographic index is included listing products according to the country in which a supplier/dealer/distributor is located.
AU the indexes are linked to the software entries section using the software name.
In the software entries section, some products have been identified with an asterisk (*). This indicates that it was not possible to confirm the entries with the suppliers.
Supplier The software producer if known (includes American companies for reference purposes)
European Dealers/Distributors Names of any Europe-based companies known to be marketing and supporting the software
General Details Brief information about the software
Descriptors
Operating System Normally microcomputer operating systems. The software may also run on other operating systems this should be confirmed with the supplier concerned
