The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players Fund would like to acknowledge the individuals and companies below, without whose donations of money and resources this book would not have been possible.

Ten years ago, the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players Fund made its first tentative foray into the world of books when it published an outdoor cookbook featuring past and present Springbok rugby players.

In the decade since it first appeared, not a week has gone by without someone enquiring where they could get hold of a copy of our out-of-print first attempt at a publication that not only provided tasty recipe ideas, but more importantly helped raise funds for seriously injured rugby players.

To commemorate three decades of the Funds existence, we have decided to return to the kitchen to produce the book you are holding. Springbok Kitchen has been a labour of love for all involved and I would like to express my thanks to the entire production and publishing team that helped put it together. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to those past and present Springbok rugby colleagues of mine who gave of their precious time to lift the lid quite literally on their love of food. The results have sometimes been pleasantly surprising!

The aim of this Fund, which we founded in 1980 after the death of our former Western Province teammate, Chris Burger, in a Currie Cup match, is to raise enough money to look after the more than 100 recipients who sustained serious and/or catastrophic injuries playing the game we all love. When the Fund started, we could provide only the bare minimum of assistance. Thirty years later, however, the Fund keeps going from strength to strength, thanks to the tireless work done behind the scenes by our trustees, the generous support of the general public, the rugby fraternity and the South African Rugby Union. Without them this Fund would not exist, and without the numerous donations received from individuals and companies we would not have been able to publish our latest fundraising initiative.

As long as rugby is played in this beautiful country, there is a slight chance that players will get injured, but rest assured, the Players Fund will be there to provide the necessary assistance to make their lives easier. Thanks to your continuing and unwavering support, we will be there with them every step of the way.

Rugby is an integral part of the fabric of South African life.

Everywhere you go across this vast country from the fishing towns of the Cape West Coast to the rolling green hills of the untamed Transkei, from the ultra-modern stadiums of Cape Town, Durban and Soweto to the dusty, potholed fields of Mdantsane and Uitenhage, youll always find a game of rugby on the go.

From barefooted six-year-olds with big dreams, to burly 60-something old crocks who share a lifelong camaraderie, rugby represents a uniquely South African way of life and is a vital cornerstone of our national identity.

Scores may fade from memory with the passing years, but rugbys unique brotherhood has always been about more than the results of long-forgotten games. Our sport stands alone in the way opposing players and supporters are able to celebrate and commiserate together, no matter the outcome and no matter their diverse backgrounds.

And it is often food that brings them all together.

At clubhouses from Kokstad to Kakamas, from Kasselsvlei to the worlds biggest after-match party at the Kings Park fields in Durban, lifelong rugby friendships are forged around the braai fire and memories shared over a boerewors roll.

We all have our favourite family recipes, passed down through the years a culinary link between the past and the present, and a reminder of where we come from and who we are.

Our Springbok heroes are no different and this book is a journey of discovery into the tastes and flavours, often discovered in childhood, that have helped shape them into the living legends they have become.

But this isnt only a book about the favourite recipes of some of the most famous men to wear the green and gold jersey. Its also a visual celebration of how the love of food, family and rugby combines to bring old friends and complete strangers together around fires, skottels and kitchen tables everywhere across this beautiful land.
