I n the few years since this book was first published, Ive been blessed with ongoing feedback from new readers and repeat Super Cleansers. Theyve emailed and blogged to share their success stories about how cleansing has changed the way they eat for good, to ask questions, and to share critiques and ideas for making the cleanse experience easier. Based on all the feedback, I jumped at the opportunity to keep Super Cleanse current and get real about a few things, including the #1 reason most people try a cleanse, the rising cost of food, and the ways people are staying connected and informed in the world today. Heres how getting real plays out in this edition of the book:
First, the #1 reason most people take the leap into cleansing is (drum roll, please) to lose weight. Its a fact that I didnt want to give in to in the first edition of the book, becausefor mecleansing is not a fad or crash diet, its a window into the power of food as medicine and an opportunity to examine what youre consuming that may be undermining your health. But the people have spoken, and it was time to shift my thinking! So I created the Super Slim Down, a nutritional cleanse thats satisfying, chock-full o nutrients, and carefully crafted not to include foods that weigh you down. You may come for the weight loss, but Im betting youll stay for the incredible impact eating well has on your entire being.
Next, Ive simplified the recipes and made them easier on the wallet. Ive given you other options for the more expensive or difficult-to-find ingredients, taken them out entirely, or replaced them with more economical alternatives.
Last, I can see how important it is to be connected, and how technology is transforming the way we communicate and create community. F asting and cleansing to purify the body and mind are not new concepts. They were first embraced thousands of years ago as a pathway to connect with the divine and achieve higher levels of awareness and clarity. Its more relevant than ever today.
I created the 10 cleanses in this book to awaken the spirit as much as the body and mind. Theyre mini retreats that pull you out of your daily routine so that you can examine what youre consumingand whats consuming youwhether its the food you eat, the lifestyle you choose or the environment youre living in. They give you a quick tune-up as well as an opportunity to recalibrate and realign with your internal guidance system.
So much of the food we choose to eat fogs our life force and weighs down the body in dis-ease. The effects are making headlines every day. Rates of heart disease, diabetes and cancer are on the rise, prescriptions for medications to treat depression and anxiety are at record levels, two out of three American adults are overweight, the rate of autoimmune disease is growing, chronic fatigue syndrome is a new fixture in our countrys lexiconand the list goes on and on.
Fortunately, we can set ourselves free from low energy, stress, illness, obesity, addiction, depression and a host of other physical, emotional or spiritual ailments we might be facing. The path back to wellness is simplewe just need to take a step out of our usual routine to reassess and understand how food and lifestyle choices are shaping our health.
For 17 years, I trekked across the globe exploring the healing powers of food. Along the way, I had the privilege to work with pioneers in the food as medicine movement. I cleansed, studied, cooked, sweat, prayed and meditated with holistic healers. I went out there looking for the one answer to naturally healing the body and found there isnt one right way. Staying in balance and being healthy is an evolution, and we can each start where we are. Doing a cleanse is a great first step.
My cleanses are hybrids of all that Ive seen, experienced and learned. Food is definitely the anchor in each one, because what you eat affects your whole being. Preparing food from this book even one day a week will have a positive impact on how you feeland everything in life is better when your body feels good.
We have the answer to staying clear, light and awake. So my question to you is: How can we not take time out to do a cleanse?

O ne size does not fit all when it comes to healing the body. Constitution, diet and lifestyle have a big influence on how ready people are to do a cleanse and how stringent a cleanse they can manage. Any number of factors play into the equation, including how wellor how poorlytheyve been eating, their relationship with or addiction to foods, their current state of health, and the levels of stress in their daily lives.
Not everyone is preparedphysically, mentally or emotionallyto immediately jump into a rigorous detox, so I created a series of nine cleanses to fit different states of readinessfrom gentle programs that slowly introduce a vegetarian diet to green-juice fasts that rapidly detox the body and flush the intestinal tract. As you dive into those chapters, youll get a sense of which cleanse you feel ready for.
To be certain you understand what youre getting into, I urge you to read through the earlier sections in the book to get a handle on the cleansing process and learn what you can expect to see and feel.
Ive tried to make this journey as smooth as possible for you by presenting the information in a lighthearted, easy-to-use and easy-to-understand way. To that end, this book includes a brief overview of the science behind cleansing and why it works, recipes that use readily available ingredients and require the minimum amount of equipment, hints and fun activities to help minimize the detox symptoms and boost the positive effects of the cleanses, and tactics to help you de-stress and regain your equilibrium.
Finally, theres information on how to break a cleanse and ease back into a wholesome, daily diet that nurtures your body, mind and spirit, so take time to understand the process and know what to expect before jumping in.
A few words of caution: Once youve picked a cleanse, check in with your physician or holistic health-care practitioner to see if its right for you, considering preexisting conditions you may have or medications you may be taking. You may have a medical condition that makes cleansing unwise at this particular point in your life.
Also, know that the cleanses in this book are not ongoing maintenance diets; theyre intended to be done for a limited number of days to help clean out your system and jump-start a new way of eating. The recipes are packed with enzymes, vitamins and minerals that clear your body, but they dont have the full complement of the nutrients your body needs in a long-term daily diet. So Ive provided guidance on how long to follow each program and the maximum number of times a year to do it.
