Chapter 9
Celebrating Everything Irish: St. Patricks Day
In This Chapter

Picture 1Exploring Irish charm

Picture 2Finding luck with different decorating ideas

Y ou dont have to be of Irish descent to be enchanted with Irish culture, especially at St. Patricks Day. The spirit of St. Pattys Day embraces the heartwarming message of the importance of home and family.

Long gone are the days when the only way you could celebrate and decorate for this holiday was with a Kiss Me Im Irish T-shirt and a pint of green beer. Now, you can either embrace the traditional, fun way (insert T-shirt and beer) or opt for a more soothing, understated Celtic style. I separate ideas for each style under each heading, so you can skip to the ideas that most appeal to you. Either way, this chapter gives you plenty of ideas to start your St. Patricks Day decorating.

Finding Your Inspiration

To help you define your focus, Ive provided you with inspiration pieces for traditional dcor and for Celtic dcor. Table 9-1 lists the traditional stuff, and Table 9-2 lists the Celtic pieces. Perhaps you want to decorate an office party in rip-roaring Irish decorations but decorate your home with a more serene and naturalistic Celtic flair. Keep these different themes in mind when youre going through the inspiration lists. Make notes of anything else you can add or how you can adapt pieces from one list into the other.

Think Emerald Isle when decorating natural colors, deep greens, perhaps a running fountain so that you can hear a gentle trickle of water in the background. Think soothing, peaceful, and lush. Youll come up with many ideas for decorating with this mindset. Ancient Ireland, with its castles, cottages, and moss-covered huts, are sources of inspiration when deciding how you want to decorate for this holiday.

Planning and Organizing Your Holiday Decorating

You need to decide where you want to decorate and in what style or theme. Although a Celtic theme may sound pretty, it may not be exactly what your guests had in mind when they arrive at your St. Patricks Day party at your house. Make sure to choose a style of decorating that fits in best with your audience. If youre decorating a classroom, I doubt that moss or Irish linen decorations are appropriate; likewise, if you want an upscale, elegant look, you dont want to have plastic pots o gold and pictures of leprechauns on your wall. Decide who youre decorating for (even if its just for you) and what seems most appropriate. Then gather a pen and paper and start taking notes from your inspiration list and jot down any other ideas that may come to you.

Check your local calendar section in your newspaper for any special parades or events centered around St. Patricks Day and enter them in your calendar. If you are planning a party, you may want to host a get-together after a parade, or choose a different date altogether. List all the decorating you want to do, and then read on! Plenty of Irish-inspired decorations await.

Decorating in a Flash

If you just found out that guests plan to come over for some Celtic celebrations, you may need to arrange some Irish dcor in a hurry. Check out some of my ideas to get your creative juices flowing, so that you can add a little touch of the Emerald Isle around your home.

For quick touches throughout the house, try using

Picture 3Simple items you may already own that can be customized quickly for St. Patricks day decorating. Pick up a gold paint pen or marker at a craft store and emblazon some of your favorite Celtic words or Irish blessings on candles, flower pots, votive holders, or on stones or pieces of slate. Even simple kitchen ceramic tiles from a hardware store can serve as coasters (and take-home gifts) with a blessing printed on each one.

If your handwriting is like mine, you may want to opt for transferring images onto these items. Follow my instructions for transferring images to surfaces in Chapter 24.

Picture 4Novelty items, purchased from a party supply store, that reflect traditional Irish dcor and are geared for St. Patricks Day. Little black cauldrons can be filled with gold foiled chocolate coins. Paper goods with shamrocks and leprechauns printed on them can accent dessert tables. Little hats paper or plastic can sit at each place setting.

Picture 5A galvanized metal tub, filled with ice for an instant bar where you can serve cold beverages at the end of your buffet. For other quick buffet dcor ideas, check out the following:

Group plenty of Irish coffee mugs together on a tray and place near your coffee service.

Mass groupings of glass or crystal in unusual shapes look great and serve a purpose. Use them for holding mints or sugar cubes for coffee or tea, or fill them with water and float candles in them.

Attach small gold charms, found at a craft store, with a little green ribbon to serving utensils for a little touch of Irish charm.

Picture 6Your food as part of the decorating as well. Irish food can be quite decorative; here are some ideas:

If you serve little crocks of potato soup or hearty Irish stew, serve cloverleaf-shaped rolls with it. Theyll give your appetizer a little Irish charm. (You can often find these rolls in your supermarkets bakery around this time of year.)

A few drops of green food coloring tints all sorts of food items well, if youre into eating and drinking green things!

Using one cookie cutter, you can cut your finger sandwiches into shamrock shapes, make custom cookies, have a pattern for cutting out paper decorations, and more.

Refer to Chapter 3 for unique table settings and napkin folds. Not only is the four-leaf clover napkin easy, but it also looks great at any place setting.

If youre looking for a more Celtic way of decorating in a hurry, visit a garden center. Purchase natural materials, such as spongy green mosses, shamrock plants, and smooth river stones, along with a few rustic planters. Hot glue pieces of moss to the decorative planters before repotting shamrock plants into them. River stones can be placed in the bottom of clear glass jars to hold small taper or votive candles to line your walkway. A flat of wheat grass works nicely for a low centerpiece on a dining table.
