CONTENTS

FOREWORD

Lance Armstrong

AS ATHLETES, WE CAN ALL RELATE TO ONE ANOTHER BECAUSE we share a common starting point. We all began as novices in our respective sports, and no matter how skilled we became, we all remember those first training rides. We learned the skills, we sought guidance from those who came before us, and we improved.

When Chris told me he was writing a book on sports nutrition, I immediately lent my support to the project because Ive seen firsthand the effects that food can have on performance. Like many new athletes, I paid little attention to what I ate when I started out, and for a while I was successful in spite of the food I was eating.

Perhaps the biggest lesson Ive learned about sports nutrition is that paying attention to it can make your dreams come true, and neglecting it can be your undoing. During the Tour de France, my teammates and I are eating machines; we eat and drink constantly from the time we get up until we go to bed, and yet there have been times when Ive felt that unpleasant feeling that comes when you know youre running out of gas. And in the end, all of the training and determination in the world can be undone by something as simple as eating or drinking too little.
