Acknowledgments
T o begin, I want to first and foremost thank my parents and siblings who helped me through the tough teen years with my own depression. My family was my lifeline through stormy waters. (Both my father, Jim Purcell, and my mother, Diane Purcell, died during the writing of this book, so Id like to put in a special remembrance to them here. I loved them with all of my heart!) My husband and kids keep me happy and healthy today, and their constant encouragement of my work makes it a pleasure to keep on writing.
Next, I want to thank my editor, Arlene Hirschfelder, for her guidance (and editorial suggestions) during the writing of this book. She helped to shape it into something I am proud of. Id also like to thank Debra Koenitz, LCPC, ATR-BC, who oversaw the technical content of the book and helped most with formulating the questionnaires for the teens who participated in the book. Her time, opinions, input, and edits are much appreciated.
A million thanks go to my critique partners Roger Peck, Lorijo Metz, and Anne Courtright, who catch any errors and question anything thats not quite right. Their critiques and coffee klatches keep the words flowing and red pen moving swiftly. Id like to also thank Heather Schwartz, my daughter, for her beautiful photography, which adds an invaluable perspective to this book. I love you!
The biggest thanks go to the teen participants who were willing to share their stories, words, photography, and talents to make this book as authentic as possible. This book is for you!
Id also like to thank John Baer for negotiating my contracts. I appreciate all you do for me.
Lastly, to the readers of this book, I appreciate you trusting me to tell the stories of the teens. I hope you find this helpful and encouraging, and know that you will get through this time in your lives. Although it may be difficult... never lose hope!
