PREFACE
The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it is the same problem you had last year.
John Foster Dulles
If accountability is so important, why do so many leaders struggle with it?
Why arent we getting more of the results we want?
Most important, what can we do to improve?
Working with successful CEOs and leadership teams in a range of industries, I am told repeatedly that holding people accountable is easy to say but often tough to do.
I believe them. The evidence is everywhere. Politicians argue about who will be held accountable for eliminating crushing debt brought on by decades of spending more than saving. Record numbers of CEOs lose their jobs every year because they failed to hold their employees accountable to the performance expectations of boards and shareholders. And obesity continues to be a sure sign that, for many, personal accountability is nonexistent.
