Teams At the Top: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Teams At the Top" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

It is common knowledge that CEOs declare their direct reports as a team at the top. Yet with a culture of individual accountability and self-reliance pervading executive suites, few management groups ever function as real teams. Now, in a natural follow-up to his bestselling The Wisdom of Teams, Jon Katzenbach offers practical guidelines for increasing leadership capacity at the highest executive levels. He shows how even the strongest and most successful CEO can improve a companys performance by turning the senior executive group into a real team - without sacrificing each members individual leadership capabilities. Teams at the Top explains how to recognize when a team effort at the management level is preferable and when a work group under single leadership will do. Then, the book shows how to develop the capability to shift into whichever mode is appropriate. With stories and examples from well-known companies including Avon, Ben & Jerrys, Citicorp, and Clorox, Teams at the Top will help companies of all sizes and in all industries maximize the full potential of their leadership.

Acknowledgments
Of the many people who helped with this book, my first acknowledgments go to those senior executives who shared their experiencespositive and negativewith me. Some were clients, of course, but most were not. Only two asked not to be identified in the book, and three were more comfortable in disguised examples. Dozens of others, however, were most generous in allowing me to learn about, comment on, and interpret their experienceseven when it cast them in a less than favorable light. I truly appreciate their openness, insight, and cooperation, without which the book would be much less realistic.
Next, I would like to thank a small group who helped me nourish the initial idea, and enabled me to develop it. Of my partners and colleagues, William Matassoni was the first to suggest the topic to me, and Roger Kline, Larry Kanarek, and Steven Dichter saw the potential in my early drafts. Richard Cavanagh, executive director of The Conference Board, as he has so many times before, provided sage counsel and insights on the substance of the material.
The real work, however, was shouldered mostly by my assistants, Debbie Shortnacy and Lisa Rawlings. Lisa, in particular, managed a vast array of case write-ups, drafts, redrafts, and revisions. She somehow tracked us through more than ten complete versions before a final manuscript emerged. In addition, Gene Zelazny deserves special thanks for his creative contributions to the charts, tables, and exhibits. Of course, the professionals at Harvard Business School Press were diligent throughout, and I particularly appreciate the wise counsel and advice of Marjorie Williams in helping shape and clarify my arguments and messagesand in urging me to take the time to get it right.

Most importantly, however, I wish to acknowledge the invaluable and special contributions of Nancy Taubenslag and Linda Katzenbach. Nancy, as she did for Wisdom of Teams, led the research and worked with me to develop the cases, verify the facts, question the logic, and suggest substantive content improvement. My wife, Linda, was far and away my most diligent, thoughtful, and insightful reader and editor. She read each and every draft, questioned each and every hypothesis, and edited all materials for both substance and grammatical correctness. Most importantly, she made me defend every assertion and conclusion. Much of the credit for the clarity, readability, continuity, and conciseness of the material belongs to her.
