Preface
As far back as I can remember, the name Kierkegaard has buzzed around my home, thanks mainly to my late father's philosophical preoccupations and religious orientation. It was not an exclusive focus, however, for Kierkegaard was usually presented as belonging to a gallery of towering intellectual figures from the Western tradition to whom I received sustained, though often very cursory, exposure: the thinkers of ancient Greece, Augustine, Aquinas, Pascal, Kant, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Whitehead, Heidegger, and Buber, among others. Great was my delight therefore when Donald Fleming of the History Department at Harvard, in the course of surveying selected gaps in the intellectual history of modern Europe, mentioned that the early dissemination and reception of Kierkegaard's thought were largely
