A few years ago, I gave a one-day seminaron executive effectiveness to some businesspeople, emphasizing the importanceof being able to speak well and influence people.

At the end of the day, a shy businessmancame up to me and told me that, as a result of my comments, he had decided tolearn to become an excellent speaker. He had been ignored by his supervisorsand passed over for promotions. He was frustrated and was willing to dowhatever it took to reignite his career.

One year later, I received a letter fromthe same businessman. He had taken action on his resolution. He had joined alocal chapter of Toastmasters, an organization dedicated to helping its membersimprove their speaking skills. He had also taken a fourteen-week Dale Carnegiespeaking course.

Within six months, he had given so manypresentations and talks that most of his fear and anxiety of speaking was gone.In its place was a growing confidence in his ability to express himself to anaudience. He was a new man.

It was at this time in his development thata small emergency occurred in his engineering firm. A partner had beenscheduled to give a presentation to a client but was ill and unable to attendthe meeting.

The businessmans boss asked him if hewould prepare and present the companys proposal instead. He accepted the task.

Throughout the evening and the followingmorning, he prepared his presentation thoroughly. He went to the clientsoffice, made an excellent presentation for the firms services, and got thebusiness. When he returned, his boss told him that the president of theprospective client had called and thanked him for sending someone to give suchan excellent presentation of the firms services.

Within a few weeks, he was being sent outregularly to call on the firms prospects and clients. He was promoted andpromoted again. Soon he was a member of senior management and on his way tobecoming a partner.

He told me that his whole life had changedby making a decision to become a good speaker.

Becoming a good speaker will not onlyrevolutionize your career. It might just change your life.

My goal in writing this book is to helpsimplify the process of becoming an excellent speaker for you. In myexperience, to become an outstanding 6-Figure Speaker, you need to have thefour Ds.

• Desire. First,you must have an intense, burning desire to speak well. If your desireis strong enough and you want to become a 6-Figure Speaker long enough, nothingcan stop you from reaching your goal. But desire is not enough.
• Decision. Likethe businessman, you must make a decision this very day that you aregoing to make every effort, overcome any obstacle, and do whatever it takes tobecome a 6-Figure Speaker.
• Discipline. Youmust have the discipline to plan, prepare, and deliver talks andpresentations, over and over again, until you achieve success.
• Determination.Finally, you must have the determination to persist and persevere inspite of any short-term setback, obstacle, or embarrassment you may experience.
