In The Undying West, Carlene Cross creates a memorable blend of personal and regional history. The voices in her stories include those of her father and his sod-busting friends; the Salish, Kootenai, Nez Perce, and Iroquois Indians; the fossil remains of Montanas prehistory; and even the wind, the soil, and the prairie grasses. Cross is a storyteller in the tradition of such notable Western writers as William Kittredge, Rick Bass, and Ivan Doig. And like them, she offers a personal testament to the enduring qualities of the West. Includes 50 black and white photographs and maps.

Books are rarely the work of a lone individual; so it is with this one. My mother combed libraries, retrieved community documents, and unearthed photos when distance made it impossible for me to do so. As always, her support has been that of a dedicated mom and dearest friend.
My father convinced his sod-busting friends to reminisce into my tape recorder, earnestly arguing that there were people who wanted to read about such things. He happily repeated his own homesteading, Prohibition, and Depression stories and provided a wealth of information about cattle futures and land preservation.
Without the help of my sister, I would have made some embarrassing mistakes. Melanie understands farming better than I ever will and is the only woman I know who can differentiate between knap weed and fan weed or can tell me that my long-horned antelope should have been prong-horned. She is just as much fun today as she was thirty years ago when we swam in the horse trough together.
My teenagers, Carise, Mi'cael, and Jason, graciously listened to rough drafts and fretted about my reclusiveness. They are wonderful people and raising them has been the proudest thing I've ever done.
My Uncle Bud shared his wealth of Indian and homesteader history with the delightful good humor for which he is known throughout

the area. My cousin, Tammy Beerntsen, loaned her beautiful photographs, and my grandfather recalled his homestead days. Grandpa is responsible for a large and colorful family, which has supported this project like they always do one another.
Camas Prairie residents Johnny Stanislaw, Arthur Argo, Jim and Theresa Holland, Vera Burgess, Ed Sipes, Chuck Hunter, Morland Neiman, and Herb Cross offered great help. They gave me pictures and wonderful tales of life in the valley.
For years, Al Listen sent books and news articles from Missoula about Montana history and current events. His friendship and timing have always been perfect.
