Dedication
I, Thiago Bruce Rodrigues, dedicate this book to those who are the main source of inspiration and love in my life: my family. My wife, Giselle Bussi, brings light to my existence, showing that I can be a better person every day. My brother, Glauco Bruce, demonstrates in his acts that the power of thoughts overflows from the soul. My honorable father, Roberto Rodrigues, who taught me that dreams are hard to chase but are the raw material for achieving happiness in life. My beloved mother, Martha Bruce, who practices the real meaning of unconditional love and makes me believe that a better world is possible through human relationships. Finally, my grandmother, Wilma Rodrigues, who makes her life a great lesson for her children and grandchildren. Yes, we did it!
I, Amaro Emiliano Trindade-Silva, dedicate this work to my wife, Priscilla Rocha, my inexhaustible source of love and courage; to my eldest son, Angelo, who is just coming to light even more than our lives; to my parents, Abel Silva and Lena Trindade, who have always been my greatest example in life; and to my brother, Andr Trindade, who inspires me with his music and friendship. Thank you guys! You are the the forces that shaped my character, taste for art, connection with nature, and joy of living. Love you!

Microorganisms mediated our planets transformations and are key components of the biogeochemical cycles that keep Earth functioning. They are very sensitive to environmental conditions, and changes in the microbial communities diversity and abundance can bring severe consequences to environmental or organism functions. Moreover, microbiomes are not only key components of all living beings but can be an essential part of them. As regards humans, even some features we consider so particular, such as our talents and moods, can be influenced by the microbial diversity of our guts. Knowing and understanding the balance, or unbalance, of different microbial populations in environmental or host samples can allow us to describe diseases and ecosystem impacts and can also provide the development of solutions based on the manipulation of such microbiome compositions.
Our challenge is to describe the microbial communities patterns in different samples (humans, animals, and environmental), correlating them with biotic and abiotic factors, to establish connections between different elements of the system and microbiota profiles and functions. Understanding microbiomes and their mechanisms of interactions can allow us to manipulate environmental and host conditions. In parallel, it is fascinating to discover new metabolites and molecular pathways, complete the gaps in our knowledge in evolutionary history, and provide biotechnological resources. This justifies the interest in producing a book that presents the fundamentals of the frontline technologies that are being used for characterizing and mining such resources.
