Introduction A Better Job Begins On Paper
Congratulations for picking up this book! The new millennium is upon us, and there's no better time to create a better future for yourself.
I'm writing this book for the so-called "blue collar" workers, the people who do some of the hardest, most essential, and least recognized work in the world.
Just about every major company, from Motorola to General Motors to Pillsbury, relies on millions of blue collar workers to assemble, repair, stock, and deliver what they sell. Without this essential work force, America would grind to a halt, a fact that many believe is lost to some of the people who run those big companies.
But as the 21st century begins, there are signs of change. At the time of this writing, unemployment is down to less than 5 percent, and some companies are feeling the pinch of a tight labor market. At my resume service, I get calls every week from employment agencies looking to fill positions for drivers, factory workers, and a multitude of other skilled trades. Industry analysts such as Tom Peters have spoken for years about the essential role of blue collar

and service workers, because in many cases, they have the most direct contact with the most important person in business: the customer.
Finally, after all the cutbacks and layoffs of the early 1990s, blue collar workers are in greater demand than ever before. They are demanding-and getting-higher pay and better benefits.
But there's a catch. Employers are now looking for people with wider skill sets to work longer hours, and they expect higher quality work and devotion to their company. In other words, they want more bang for their buck.
