- 1 (16 ounce) box firm tofu
- 1 egg
- cup cornstarch
- vegetable oil (for frying)
- 3 chopped green onions
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- cup vegetable stock
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- red pepper flakes
- 1 tablespoon sherry wine (optional)
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- steamed broccoli
Directions
- Drain, dry and cut tofu into one inch chunks-You can freeze the tofu the night before to get a more"chicken-like" texture, if desired.
- Mix egg with 3 Tbs of water.
- Dip tofu in mixture.
- Sprinkle cornstarch over tofu to completely cover.
- Heat oil in pan and fry tofu pieces until golden brown and set aside.
- Drain oil.
- Heat 3 Tbs vegetable oil in pan on medium heat and add onions, ginger and garlic, cook for about two minutes (be careful not to burn garlic).
- Add vegetable stock, soy sauce, sugar, red pepper flakes and vinegar.
- Mix 2 Tbs of water and 1 Tbs cornstarch and pour into mixture, stirring well.
- Add fried tofu and coat evenly.
- Serve immediately with steamed broccoli over your choice of rice.
Ingredients
- 1 (350 g) package extra firm tofu
- 3 tablespoons tamari or 3 tablespoons soya sauce
- cup Red Star nutritional yeast
- 1 teaspoon seasoning (EG Tony Chachere's, Mrs Dash or mix your own combination)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, to lightly grease a skillet (or other veggie oil)
Directions
- Lightly grease a non-stick pan with oil.
- Put tamari (soy sauce) in a bowl.
- In another bowl mix yeast and spices.
- Slice tofu into 1/4-inch slices.
- Dip tofu in the tamari and then in the yeast mixture.
- Fry until golden; flip and brown the other side.
- Add a bit of oil if necessary.
Ingredients
- 14 ounces extra firm tofu
- cup cornstarch, for dusting
- canola oil (for frying)
- cup sesame seeds, lightly toasted
- 1 bunch scallion, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
Sauce
- cup honey
- 3 tablespoons tamari soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons finely minced gingerroot
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
- 2 finely minced garlic cloves
- 1 -2 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes
Directions
- Wrap tofu with paper towels and place on a cutting board.
- Put a heavy plate on top to press out liquid for approximately 20 minutes.
- Stir sauce ingredients together in a saucepan.
- Simmer sauce while you cook the tofu.
- Dry drained tofu with paper towels and cube.
- Dust very lightly with cornstarch.
- Heat 1" oil in deep frying pan.
- Fry tofu in 350 degree F oil until golden brown.
- Place fried tofu in a large bowl and toss with 2/3 cup sauce, sprinkle liberally with sesame seeds and scallions.
