Golf Beats Us All (And So We Love It): summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Golf Beats Us All (And So We Love It)" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

An extended reflection on the pleasures and wisdom of golf, Golf Beats Us All will satisfy the philosopher lurking in every avid golfer and make the golfer smarter and wiser about himself and his game. Author Joe Amato has long been fascinated by the myriad of pleasures offered by golf. And like any player, he remains intrigued by the fact that golfers find such pleasure in a game that causes so much pain, wastes so much time, and whose outcome is of utter insignificance. He offers an intelligent and searching conversation that invites readers to think about their relation to a game that makes them angels and fools.

FOREWORD
JOE AMATO AND I got started in our love affair with golf the same waythat is, as bag rats or loopies, commonly called caddies.
We saw it allfrom the once-a-year player who would make several shots that made no noise, to the finely-tuned competitive amateurs, and of course, the touring pros. Although their swings and thought processes were miles apart, they all experienced, as Joe points out, the longest distance in golffrom the practice tee to the first tee.
He describes the solitude of golf and the never-ending imagination of golf shots that we all have. Your mind will have flashbacks to shots that you first imagined and then hit. Some of these were successful, some not. But success is sometimes easier to remember and certainly more fun.
My flashback is to 1984. In the finals of our member-guest invitational, my partner and I found ourselves in a suddendeath playoff for the championship. You won't need a caddie for this story because it lasts only one hole.
Faced with a 218-yard second shot to a 500-yard par five, I thought to myselfgo out in style, hit the knife. If I failed, everyone would agree that the shot was too tough, as no one can hit a 1-iron, but if I succeeded, the story would be locked in a corner of my mind forever.

The ball looked as big as a baseball, with the late afternoon sun at our backs. The scores of people watching were dressed in their finery for the celebration dinner dance.
It worked! Safely on in two with two putts from 35 feet did the job. The thoughts of a local football coach, Al Fracassa, came to mind. He always told his kids, "If you can conceive it, and you believe it, you can achieve it." This is in keeping with what Joe alludes to in Chapter Three, Delights and Ecstasies.
Joe Amato explores some of the oddities of this game. How do you define the perfect swing? Why did early players score so well with just a few clubs?
