Dedication
This book is dedicated to Oliver Bidwell, who was one of the most successful high school coaches in the country, and to Pete Beiden, who was one of the most successful college coaches in the country. Both men were highly skilled students of the game and masters of the fundamentals of the game. I was fortunate to have played for both coaches.
Oliver Bidwell was my high school coach. Pete Beiden was my college coach. Their passion for the game ignited a fire in each of their players. Their knowledge and keen interest in the fundamentals of the game were passed on others. I and so many players were blessed to have played for these two dedicated coaches.

The many pitchers I have coached made this book possible. Their dedication to learning and their willingness to explore new ideas helped to develop many of these drills. Each pitcher is unique. Although some have similar styles, use similar grips and have similar arm slots, no two are alike. Therefore, the need to use a variety of drills is important. Often a particular drill dramatically helps one pitcher but does not affect another. This makes cooperation between the pitcher and the coach an absolute necessity if true teaching is to take place. So, I acknowledge and thank every pitcher who has allowed me to experiment, examine and adjust his pitching deliveries.
Teaching is a challenging adventure. Learning is similar. To do either, the mind must be free to explore and be willing to meet the challenges and gain from the adventure. Each pitcher offers a pitching coach opportunity to create a better road to communicating. Those pitchers who had difficulty understanding the mechanics of pitching were catalysts for innovation in drills. The highly skilled pitchers set examples and encouraged the use of the drills.
I owe a great debt of gratitude to the many coaches who passed on their knowledge of pitching to me. Many coaches filled this bill. Ollie Bidwell and Pete Beiden are at the head of the list. Though they did not write a word in this book, they are largely responsible for the information in it. To all those coaches whom I heard speak at clinics or who took time to discuss pitching with me, I salute. These coaches were the genesis of many of these drills.
