CHAPTER
People earn money for many reasons. People earn
money to buy things they need for their family. A
family needs a place to live. A family needs food
and clothes.
People also earn money to buy things they want.
Someone might want to buy tickets to a movie.
Another person might want to buy popcorn. People
earn money to buy things they need and things
they want.
Why People
Earn Money
Why People
Earn Money
People earn money for things they want.
A person earns money by working at a job .
Some jobs can be done in a few hours or days.
At the end of the job, the person is paid for the
work done.
Other jobs are done every day. Some jobs are
done outside. People may work on farms outside.
Sometimes people who build houses work outside.
There are jobs that can be done inside, too. A
person may go to a store or to an office to do
the work. If someone likes to talk to people, they
may choose to work as a salesperson in a store.
For some jobs, a person may go to school a
long time. It takes special skills to be a doctor
or teacher. But for each job, the person earns
money. Then they can buy what they need and
some things they want.
CHAPTER
Many jobs must be done by a grown-up person.
Only an adult can be a police officer or dentist.
But are there jobs kids can do? Yes! There are
lots of jobs for kids.
To decide what job may be right, kids might ask
themselves these questions.
Do I like to be inside or outside?
Do I like animals?
Am I good at talking to adults?
Jobs Kids
Can Do
Jobs Kids
Can Do
There are many jobs kids can do.
Jaden likes animals. His grandmother has a dog
named Oscar. Jaden offers to wash Oscar once a
week. His grandmother agrees to pay Jaden one
dollar each time. Jaden and Oscar both like this
job!
Emily enjoys being outside. Her mother does not
have time to take care of the garden. Now Emily
is paid two dollars for each hour that she weeds
and waters the garden. If Emily wants to earn $8
to go to a movie, she knows she must work four
hours to earn the money.
$2 x hours = $8
