CHAPTER
Many people work at a job. People earn
money when they work. Most people do not
spend every dollar they earn. Some of the
money they are paid for a job is put aside.
This is called saving.
But why do people save? Why dont they spend
the money they have worked hard to earn?
Why People Save Why People Save

People save money.

People save so they can pay for things they need
and things they want. Some people who work
have families. They may save part of what they
earn to pay for things their children will need.
By saving money, the family can pay for visits to
the dentist or doctor.

Other people save money for clothes and food
they need. A parent may need to buy food for
their family. We all need food, clothes, and a
place to live. These things cost money.

Sometimes a family may want to take a trip. By
saving money each time a person gets paid, the
money adds up. By saving the family can pay
for the trip they want.

Some kids have jobs. Saving money from a job
is a way to get the money you need to buy
items you want. Pretend you earn $10 doing
chores. If a soccer ball costs $40, you will have
to save money to buy it. The more you save, the
sooner you can buy what you want.

CHAPTER
When someone works at a job, they
may be paid by getting a paycheck . A
paycheck is like money. It can be taken to
a bank where it can be traded for money.
Other paychecks go directly to the persons
bank. Most people keep some of the money
to spend. Part of the money will go into an
account at the bank. The bank is a safe
place to save money.
How People Save How People Save

Banks help people save money.

Most kids who have a job do not get a
paycheck. Many adults and kids are paid
with money. It is easy to spend money right
away. You dont have to go to a bank to take
dollars and cents out of an account. So it is
important to have a safe place at home to put
aside some of your earnings.

Emma earns money by helping her mother at
home. She gets paid $10 each week for the
chores. Emma would like to spend the money
right away. But she made her own safe place
to save money. Now Emma puts aside $5 each
week. In four weeks, she will have the money
saved for a new shirt she wants to buy.
