Making Money

A grown-up earns money by working at a job. You might earn money, too. What did you do to help around the house this week? Did you help your dad in the yard? Did you clean your room? Did you do the dishes after a meal?

Mowing lawns is a good way to earn your own money.

Some children get an allowance . An allowance is money that is given to a child every week or every month. Children may get paid for helping with jobs around the house. Some parents give an allowance so their children can learn how to spend and save money.

Some children get an allowance each week.

.

Did you ever earn money by having a lemonade sale? On a hot summer day, you could probably sell a lot of lemonade. Lets say you charge twenty-ve cents a cup. If you sold twenty cups, how much money would you earn? You would earn ve dollars.

If this girl sells a lot of lemonade, she will make a lot of money.

A relative might send you a check for your birthday. A check is a type of money, too. It is a special slip of paper that you can take to a bank. At the bank, you trade the check for money you can save or spend.

Some adults give checks to people as gifts for birthdays or other special days.

Save It for Later

There is a lot you can do with the money you earn. You can spend it. If you get a three-dollar allowance, you could buy a toy or a book at the store. You could buy a drink or a treat from a snack bar. Remember to tell an adult before you spend your money.

You can spend your money on things you really want.

.

You can also save your money. When you save money, you put it away to spend later. When you spend your money right away, you can buy things that cost only as much money as you have. When you save your money, you can buy things that cost more.

The more money you save, the more you will have to spend later.

Some children save their money for a long time. You can save to buy a game or toy that costs a lot of money. You might even save money to help pay for college.

You might be able to buy a bike if you save your money.

.

You can spend and save at the same time! You can keep your money in two jars. You can label one jar spend and the other jar save. When you earn money, you can put half in one jar and half in the other. What would you like to buy? Would you need to save your money to buy it? It may seem hard to save, but you will be happy you did!

Using two jars helps you keep some money to spend now and save some money to spend later.

Keeping Money Safe

Where do you keep your money? If you keep it in your pocket, you can lose it. You might forget the money is there. The money could fall out or get lost when you wash your clothes. Can you think of a safer place to keep your money?
