RACING HEARTS
Angell shifted so that he faced Ava, both of them leaning one shoulder against the back of the car. Then the train hit a curve and she lurched against him, her hand on his chest.
His hands caught her shoulders and the train steadied, but he did not loosen his grip. She felt her nerves melt beneath his touch, felt the barely concealed longing within her rise up and make her lean into his hands.
His eyes were on her, she could see them despite the darkness, now that they were so close. And they were so close. It was so dark. And they were so alone. On the back of a speeding train that raced through the coal-black midnight of Midwestern farmland. The knowledge of such privacy squelched the protesting voice inside her.
"What do you want, Ava?" he asked, his voice dusky, his hands hot even through the jacket.
She was on the verge of saying it, of asking for what she'd wanted since she'd stepped out on this platform with him. Her breath came rapidly, and she parted her lips to speak.
"Say it," he said, his grip tightening. "You have to say it, Ava."
"Kiss me" she said in a hot, hoarse breath.

Prologue
March, 1860
Georgia
The boy sprinted through the trees, wet branches lashing his face and slicing his hands. His good shoes slapped against mud and muck, his feet slipped, caught, and pushed forward again. Behind him, through the mist, the baying of the hounds echoed hollowly. Always the same distance, never tiring.
His lungs burned. His breath rasped loud in his ears. Unconscious tears of terror burned hot on his cheeks. Strong, coltish legs protested every step, yet he could not stop. They would catch him, and if the dogs didn't tear him up, they would take him back to River Oaks and chain him like an animal. He knew what would happen then; he'd seen Seth after the dogs had got to him and he knew the stings suffered from tree branches would be nothing compared to the lash of the driver's whip.
The underbrush grew thick. He stumbled on, pushing aside brambles and prickers, heedless of the blood

they drew. Ahead of him, the forest was dense. Tendrils of mist rose up from the ground like specters, ghostly arms wound around trees and beckoned him forward, enveloping him as he plunged onward.
The boy felt his knees falter at the same time his toe caught on a root. Momentum threw him forward, hands outstretched, and he splattered to the ground, sliding hard on soaked leaves and mud.
He lay still, gasping in the gauzy air, and strained to hear the barking of the dogs, the snapping of tree limbs, the shouts of men as they thrashed through the underbrush. But he heard nothing. Nothing.
He didn't move, taking momentary comfort in the feel of the earth on his chest, the mud in his hands. The dank smell of leaf mold thickened the air. He lay his head on one arm, listening, unable to stop the sharp, desperate heave of his own breathing.
All was quiet. Had they reached the creek and lost his scent?
He closed his eyes. The earth warmed quickly to his body, conformed to his shape. He thought if he could just be safe, he would never leave this spot.
