A NEW BEGINNING
"You're perfect," Pete whispered.
A warmth flowed through Haley as he stroked her. She allowed him to look his fill and surprisingly felt no shyness. To be seen and admired by Pete seemed as natural as anything she had ever known.
Moving slowly, she slipped her hands beneath his sweater. His chest was broad and tanned a deep gold in contrast to her light skin. Haley let her hands roam as she marveled at his splendid form.
Her eyes, following her hands, caught sight of her wedding band, still firmly in place more than a year after Allen's death. With a deep and deliberate breath, she drew back and slid the ring off her finger. "I think it's time I put this away."

Chapter One
The shrill jangle of the telephone cut through the storeroom's dusty air. Haley Roberts put down the ancient coffee grinder, grabbed a cobwebbed vase that threatened to crash to the floor and snatched up the receiver before the raucous jangle could sound again.
"Time and Again Antiques," she said automatically, as she cradled the receiver against her shoulder.
"Haley? Scott here. I haven't talked to you lately and I just thought I'd give you a call."
Trying not to sigh aloud, Haley rolled her eyes toward the ceiling. A call from Scott Manning was never the highlight of her day. "Hi, Scott. What's new with you?" She wiped the grimy vase with a cloth.
"I have two tickets for the theater next Saturday, and I thought you might like to go with me. It's a premier performance, and they cost a bundle, but it should be worth it."
"I'm sorry, Scott. I already have plans," she said.
Page 8
"But I've already paid for the tickets. Think about it. By the way," he said, deftly changing the subject, "you'll never guess who I ran into last weekend."
"Scott, I'd love to chat but I'm really busy. A new shipment of French antiques arrived this morning and"
"Remember Gloria Gilbert from the college choir? She's in town and she said to tell you"
"You aren't listening to me. I don't have time to talk. There's a huge crate of antiques waiting for me. It will take me all afternoon to clean and catalog them."
"Gloria thought we might all get together while she's in town. You know she got a divorce and...." Scott's voice crooned on.
Haley closed her eyes and tried to keep her temper. Her assistant, Mrs. Benson, was out for lunch and she wanted to have some of the mess cleared away before she returned. Piles of excelsior littered the floor, along with wads of foreign newsprint. Clutter made Mrs. Benson nervous, and Haley didn't want to lose her only employee.
From the adjoining showroom, Haley heard the tinkle of the small bell over her door. She groaned. Once again she had forgotten to turn the sign around to show that the store was closed for lunch. She wasn't dressed to wait on a customer.
"Scott. Scott, listen to me. I have to go. Someone just came in."
Page 9
"Okay. Just let me tell you what Gloria said about...."
She heard footsteps crossing the room and tried to stretch her body around to see who was out there. Perhaps it was one of her regular customers and her unkempt appearance would be forgiven. The telephone cord was too short for her to reach the doorway.
With a perturbed glance at the phone, Haley used a technique she had always wanted to try. "That's very interesting, Scott. Have you heard what happened during the opening night of" She firmly hung up the phone in the middle of her own sentence. After a few seconds she picked up the receiver and assured herself that the line had disconnected, then laid the receiver on the table so Scott could not call her back. It seemed less rude than hanging up while he was talking, and it had always been almost impossible to end a conversation with him once he got started.
She wiped her hands on her tight-fitting jeans and tried to dust away the most obvious smudges on her blue-and-white plaid cotton blouse. She hoped she didn't look as rumpled as she felt. Ineffectually smoothing her coppery hair, Haley went into the showroom.
