Foreword
Yellowstone National Park is a name that carries world-wide significance. Visitors have come here by the millions through the past 100 years to view its wonders. Some of these people are fortunate enough to have worked in Yellowstone part of their lives. In doing so, a special feeling for this great park often develops in the heart of that person. Paul Schullery is one of these individuals.
Paul worked in Yellowstone Park for six summers and part of several winters from 1972 - 1977 as a park historian and naturalist. During these years he became intimately acquainted with the history of Yellowstone National Park. In fact, he became so engrossed in the archival material on deposit here, that he completed a master's thesis on "The Yellowstone Archives: Past, Present, and Future" through the history department of Ohio University. Through this effort, Paul became thoroughly familiar with Yellowstone's archives and the history of the park. He also gained tremendous insight into the historical events that transpired during the park's one hundred year history. Largely through Paul's efforts, the Yellowstone archives were inventoried, catalogued, properly stored, and put on microfilm so they now provide a chronological reference for the serious researcher of Yellowstone history. Through this minute examination of the archives, Paul uncovered letters and documents from many famous people who visited Yellowstone National Park in its earlier days, and reacted with memorable thoughts and words.
