When Seigniora Russell Laune wrote about her experiences as a wife and mother living in western Oklahoma, she was in her late seventies looking back to a time when both she and the territory were young. Her recollections, which create a compelling narrative of the details of daily life and the challenges of town building on the frontier, were originally published in 1956. Mrs. Laune's memoir was well received and widely read. Lon Tinkle, in a review in the New York Times, praised the book as an honest, detailed portrait of Oklahoma's growth. It was, he wrote, free of "sentimentality, false comedy or heroics."1
Now, three decades later, Sand in My Eyes is published for the third time, a tribute to the enduring quality of the historical record.
Seigniora Russell was a pampered, fifteen-year-old Little Rock belle when her father's ill health caused the family to move to Collingsworth County in the Texas Panhandle. There in the dry climate of the high plains, her father, a former school teacher, hoped to make his fortune as a farmer and stockraiser while regaining his health.
Life on a Texas ranch was a major adjustment for the Russell household. In Arkansas there had been the ever-present black domestic help to prepare the meals, clean the house, tend to the yard and laundry, and run errands.
In the Texas Panhandle every family member worked from dawn to dusk to wrest a living from the thin soil and the unpredictable climate. Never having lived more than two blocks from a corner grocery, the Russells suddenly faced the terrifying prospect of literally
