Page 7 Author's Preface It is my fate to live in a town steeped with Custer lore. The first house I lived in was across the street from members of the Custer family. They were the first people I became acquainted with there. When they left town just before World War II, their going-away gift to me was a pair of General Custer's cavalry boots. One hardly can cross the city of Monroe without passing the equestrian statue of the General, or cross the River Raisin he once fished in. The church that I attend is the one in which the General and Libbie Bacon were married. Several years ago I hired an assistant who, weeks later, I discovered was living in General Custer's old home. Excellent assistant that she was, I have been accused of choosing her because of that fact. Like the hometown of most people of note, one finds few people who laud him, or have any great amount of accurate information about him. Over the years there have been innumerable attempts to deify or villify him. This variance of opinion began before his death and influences opinions to this very day. Few are they who can prove impartiality where Custer is concerned, though many claim it.
