Acknowledgments
The road culminating in this book has been long, serpentine, and strewn in places with forbidding bramble. At various junctures I thought of turning back, beginning anew, or settling for a few articles. Midway along this trek I completed my monograph, Olive Schreiner: Feminism on the Frontier (Montreal: Eden Press, 1979). The preparation of this study both slaked and abetted my desire for further research and reflection upon Schreiner's life and work. Some of the individuals whom I acknowledged in this earlier book continued to play a key role in sustaining my resolve and in assisting me to complete the volume you now have in your hands. During the past decade, other people appeared who provided help at critical milestones. To all of these individuals I am deeply grateful, and I delight in the opportunity to salute them publicly.
The original manuscript for this book was roughly twice its current length. Despite its sprawling character it received rigorous scrutiny from a group of scholars whose shrewd, incisive advice and enthusiasm for it inspired me during the revising process. I am thankful for the generosity of Frank Turner. His affirmation of my thesis and major interpretations, his queries and thoughtful criticism, as well as his list of names of scholars who would be interested in my study, emboldened me at a time when I was feeling discouraged and uncertain about my manuscript's future. Deborah Epstein Nord's sensitive and subtle understanding of my work, evident in her critique of both my unrevised and my revised manuscripts, contributed decisively to its publication. Ann Scott, coauthor with Ruth First of a remarkable biography of Schreiner that presents interpretations of Schreiner at times markedly different from mine, did not hesitate to express her pleasure in my study and save me from some embarrassing errors. Similarly, Bernard Lightman and Dorothy O. Helly's wise and caring criticism of my manuscript pointed out some of its disturbing ambiguities and oversights. Sean Redding, Leonore Noll Hoffmann, and Susan Kent offered excellent suggestions and much support.
