DEDICATION
To Shri K.N. Rao,
who ignited in me the light of Jyotia.
Jyotia is the art of seeing light, of guiding, of counseling based on the truth called the horoscope. Jyotia is the pathway to God through the mazes of intuitions and the brilliance of an organized science, like any other science. Jyotia is the fusion of the divine with the mundane, the metaphysical with the scientific methodology, a divine chorus of the music of the heavens and the dance of the stars. It is that divine ballet, Jyotia, which is at once both divinity and science that we are presenting.
Growing up we all have dreams of what we would like to become in life and at first these are often rather grandiose. I can remember a much younger sister of mine declaring that she was going to become a figure skater and win an Olympic gold medal after seeing Dorothy Hamill of the USA do this is 1976. Imitating Dorothys famous haircut is about as far as she got. After reading a biography of Robert E. Lee as a young boy I can remember dreaming of going to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and becoming a famous general. This aspiration actually persisted for some time until I got to an age when I realized that there was nothing noble in this calling and that War is hell as American Civil War general, William Tecumseh Sherman, so aptly put it.
As we get older most of us have to adjust our sights to some aspiration that is realistic and obtainable, particularly as we get into our late teens and early twenties and have to make educational choices. This becomes even more of a necessity when we graduate and need to earn our own living. Fortunate are those who make a good and appropriate vocational choice in life at a young age, are able to achieve that goal and then have a life-long, satisfying career in this until they retire. Then there are people like me who spend much of their life going in and out of different careers perpetually trying to answer the question of What do I want to be when I grow up? I had grown to the age of 61 before I found the right answer, which was to be a teacher and author of the ancient astrological science of India. Better late than never, as the saying goes.
It is the hopes, dreams and aspirations of people of all ages that an astrologer encounters in their consultations and, though my official consulting days are over, I still on occasion give input on specific questions. Those who have read my article, Settlement Abroad, may recall that I was asked by a student of mine from India whether his daughters birth chart supported her wish to come to the U.S. to study at renowned music schools and then pursue a career as a vocalist. Her very specific aspiration was to become a blues singer. Apparently, India offers very limited opportunity to sing in this musical genre. The question of her settlement abroad begs the further question of whether her chart holds a good promise for such a career. More about her chart later.
This got me thinking about the charts of some famous female vocalists with which I was very familiar since I had used them to illustrate different interpretive principles of Jyotia. Though I could recall distinctive features in their charts that indicated their karma to become hugely successful and famous, I realized I had never studied them for those factors that indicated great success and fame specifically as vocalist. What could those be? This article is an investigation into that question.
In Jyotia the 2nd house is said to pertain to speech and, by extension, vocal capabilities. Would therefore the 2nd house/2nd lords of famous singers be exceptional in some way?
The performing arts in general are an indication of the 3rd house/3rd lord as I have repeatedly illustrated, particularly with the chart of actors and actresses. Theoretically, this house/lord should also be pronounced in vocalists.
Venus is the graha most associated with the arts in general and music in particular, though the other natural benefics, Jupiter and Mercury, can incline towards the arts as well, which is why Sarasvat Yoga is comprised of these grahas. My observation is that when Venus is the strongest among the benefics forming this yoga, then music is more likely to take precedence over other forms of artistic self-expression or the pursuit of knowledge.
The Moon is also an artistic graha, especially when bright and waxing and falling in its own or Venus-ruled signs or when connected to Venus.
The signs and nakatras ruled by the benefics, especially Venus, should come into play here. Among the signs, Pisces also appears to strongly pertain to musicality.
Of course, if there is great success and fame, which is usually accompanied by wealth, there should be rja and dhana yogas or other status and wealth-giving combinations.
In keeping with obtaining fame and fortune through the voice, would these yogas be connected to the 2nd house/2nd lord?
Since singers perform with their voice, would there be connections between the 2nd house/2nd lord and the 3rd house/3rd lord?
Since they make their living this way, would connections exist between the 2nd house/2nd lord and the 10th house/10th lord?
Though there are as many famous male singers as female, I have chosen in this article to focus only on the charts of top female vocalists, who are often referred to as Divas. The term derives from the Italian word for female deity. See its definition from Wikipedia:
A diva is a celebrated female singer; a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, and by extension in theatre, cinema and popular music. The meaning of diva is closely related to that prima donna. Diva can also refer to a woman, especially one in show business, with a reputation for being temperamental, demanding, or difficult to work with.
Few people from the entertainment industry, past or present, better fit this description than Barbra Streisand. Though her time of birth does come from a birth certificate and appears rather exact, I can remember questioning when first seeing her chart as a beginning student whether the Pisces ascendant that it gives was accurate. The main reason was that most of her incredible success as a recording artist and actress came in her Venus major period, which at first glance seems ill-situated to give this result on the basis of the ri, placed as it is in the 12th house. However, after reading a case study of K.N. Raos, I came to understand that Venus in her chart as the 8th lord in the 12th house forms an exceptional Viparta Rja Yoga, while additionally ruling the 3rd house of the performing arts.
